Re: Quilter 101 mini head
I've not tried an AV30, although I have an older Vox modeling amp (can't remember the model #). I've never tried a modeling amp that sounded right to me in an a/b with a non-modeling amp. There are plenty of good-sounding SS amps out there if you listen closely. Duke Robilliard used to play through an old Peavey PA head, and I had one of those back in the day as well. I mostly used it as a PA for practice, but I plugged my guitar in in a pinch and it sounded great. Seriously considering a Quilter 101 or 201 to replace my too-loud and slightly touchy Acoustic 150 as a pedal platform.
I was really close to pulling the trigger on one of these amps. I had tried various overdrive pedals with it and like what it did. I messed with all 3 heads and while I liked them all, the 101 looked more practical for me. Then I was turned on to the new (in 2016) Vox AV series amps and after trying them out, it was all over. I went with the Vox AV30. It's a modeler (analog, not digital) and tone wise blows the Quilter out of the water. The Quilter is great for what it is. Like I said, I almost bought one, but there are modeling amps out there that eat it for lunch.
