Rail plus single coil humbucker

Hi there.

I have an HSS guitar and am thinking about switching out the pups. I had the idea of trying to combine a rails pup with a single coil in the humbucker slot. Has any ever come across something like this? Would it work? Any pros, cons, precautions, suggestions?

Thanks,
Peter

Any particular reason why the prails wouldn't work for you?

Seymour Duncan PRails would be the most veratile, IMO.

The DiMarzio D Sonic is a Single Rail with a Single Coil as well that can give you combined or 2 single coils...not sure if Crunchlab can do that as well (similar design.)

It works well enough that you don't really need the legit version of your scheme. I put 2 single coils in my hss and guess what? It blends so perfectly with the other single coils that I don't even need to split it. I just run it full humbucker in my 7 way switching and it always sounds good. You're using different pickups, but if you like them, it will probably work. There's more string pull however.

Thanks Blille, that might do the trick. I started out just wanting to put a prails in the neck position and then was thinking how that would interact with the bridge pup. I then saw how some guys like Steve Lukather wire their humbucker together with their middle single coil and the idea of combining a rails with a single in the bridge position came to me. Just drawing up different combinations of pups and switching at the moment.

I've done a few variations like Clint 55 with good success ~ the more the R values become understood , the more likely to achieve the stability/tone desired ( although values sometimes are irrelevant to other brands configs
