Railhammer Cleancuts

Imperator of Indignation
I bought a set of Cleancuts today along with a number of other pickups. They are supposed to sound like P90s but the samples I have heard on Youtube sound good clean but not as good distorted. I don't think they sound much like P90s. What are these pickups like?

I don't own a set, but the samples don't sound like anything to me. Kind of tele-ish bridge and pseudo mini-humbucker neck. But the samples were done in a Jaguar, so who knows what they could really sound like.

I only have experience with railhammer's hypervintage but, it's probably the best paf replacement pickup I've ever used... so I'm really interested in what you learn.

I do have the original Rail Hammer p90 in the neck of my Reverend S Agent OG, but it's a standard p90.

I've got my eye on Reverend's three pup and now my mind is imagining what your pickups would sound like in that guitar.

i like the hypervintage too, though i dont think they sound overly paf like. output is right but the tone is more modern, great pups though!

Yeah paf really doesn't cover it but I couldn't think of anything else that's better because it's got the vintage plus the hyper in the same pup.

It has clean tight base and clear thick highs... So when I roll back the volume I can get practically any classic tone.

But when I crunch it it goes into another dimension. I don't have any clear comparisons.. not a custom custom not a JB not a Pearly Gates.

And no surprise here, it parallels itself with a nice clean chimney tone. Classic FilterTron might be the best comparison (yes I know they're in series but they have a thin-ish bright tone.)

So help me out.. I've sold a few of these by just demoing my Reverend :-) any suggestions on how you describe it and what you use it for?

i think you covered some of my thoughts. the wound strings are a little tighter and more focused and the plain strings have a little extra meat to them but still bright and clear. its not terribly off from a paf type tone but a little more refined. ive only tried em in series but i could see parallel being cool

I tried them for a few minutes yesterday and I don't think they sound like a P90 at all. It's strange how many companies use the term P90 in their advertisements when something doesn't fit the mold of either a single coil or a humbucker. It makes me wonder if they actually have heard one?

The cleancuts are brighter than a normal humbucker and have much better definition than a humbucker or single coil. Lows are tight and punchy, highs are fat, and you can hear every note in a chord with no mud. If you play complex chords and do a lot of arpeggios that's where it really shines. I you play a lot power chords with distortion it probably isn't as good at that or playing leads.

They would be a good pickup for a hollowbody. I'm going to see if I can find a Tele Thinline body to use them in.

I bet the Cleancuts would be a great modern neck to complement a bridge like the Hyper Vintage or Alnico Grande.
Haven't seen inside one; I imagine they're full width bobbins inside, minus the slugs on one and the rails on the other.

I'd love to hear one of the old Gnarly 90s. I think Joe might've discontinued those because they weren't selling well.
Curious whether they might've used a wider, flatter bobbin more like a real P90.

So I finally looked at some of the demos and I think you're absolutely right. This pickup almost sounds like the opposite of a p90... There's no mid-range spike and they're very very clean and crisp.

I also like your thin line idea and I'm also imagining it could do well in an HSS strat with classic single coils... One of the summaries said it is not splitable but it can parallel to self which could be a great option for a thin line.
