Railhammer Huevos 90 (My Tastes Are Changing)

I've been using humbuckers exclusively for over 18 years. Over the past few months however, I've been wanting to change things up a little and get something with a different character and bit more clarity in the bridge. Think "less metal, more rock." Hb's are starting to sound muddy to me. In my search for a new pickup, I ran across these http://www.railhammer.com/Huevos_90_Bridge.html.

It would be a departure for me and I'm having slight anxiety about it so I have yet to pull the trigger. My main concern is the tone thinning out and having too much treble under distortion. Basically I'm trying to avoid the "fingernails on the blackboard" vibe that I've gotten with single coils in the past. Also I don't want anything jangly. I'm not going to be playing Beatles songs, just hard rock and some Iron Maiden material. I'd be using it in a mahogany Explorer, my only guitar at the moment. The stock bridge pu is a Gibson 84T-LM. The neck pickup is a Gibson P94 but I'm not digging it either. For the time being though, I'm focusing mainly on changing the bridge pickup.

Do bridge p90s tend to get overly treble-y at times?

Also, does anyone have experience with Railhammer in general? If so, what do you think of them?

I want to feel confident about buying one of these, and not end up wanting to go back to humbuckers as soon as I hear my guitar through an amp.

My only p90 experience currently is with stock Gibsons. The neck sounds great, the bridge, to me is a little harsh.
I have a replacement set on order that I should be receiving in the next couple of days. I’ll let you know how the new set compares. (Fokin).

Question:
You and I seem to play similar type material in that rock/hard rock vein.
Is it possible that you just may be leaning toward a different humbucker?
I ask because a p90 is not something that I personally would be looking at for that type of music. Sure a p90 can get the raunch but I just feel that a humbucker is better for the job.

What does your rig look like and what would be the type of tone you’re looking for?

The railhammer pick ups are awesome sounding, BUT the guitars they are in in the Reverend line of guitars have a bass contour knob on them which really helps shape the sound. I have never heard them in a guitar that didn't have that feature. I am a huge fan of those pick ups, though. They really do sound great in those guitars.

What I would recommend doing is trying to find a local retailer that has Reverend guitars and try a couple that have that pick up in there. That would probably help you the most.

I only have experienced Railhammers hyper vintage and it is excepional.

It is my favorite psedo paf because it crunches wonderfully, but cleans up into nice clean and crisp, but its probably a little too tame on the metal side.

As mentioned above, Railhammers really love bass rolloffs and the good news is this is a very simple mod.

Whoa, I forgot I even posted this. Sorry it took so long to reply.

Yeah, I think a different humbucker might be what I really wanted. At the moment, I'm using a Boss Katana 100 and what I'm suspecting is that it isn't as great as I thought it was when I first bought it. It has it's limitations and at times it just sounds artificial. I've never tried pedals through it but I've been thinking about it. I had knee surgery in November and I'm on leave from work so I'm trying not to make any big purchases until I go back. When I go back I'd like to get a Victory RD1 and a 2x12.

well the boss katana is actually a great amp for the price just look at what ola englund can do with one, also the railhammer huevos 90 is a split humbucker (like a precision bass) tho it has the tone of a raunchy p90
