Randalls are okay, but their lower-end amps are nothing special. Some people really like them for their crunch, but I personally hate that solid-state sound when I'm playing metal. It loses a lot warmth IMO.
For the money and your purposes, I'd suggest a used Peavey 5150/6505 combo. Tube tone, 100 watts, built like a brick, perfectly suited for metal, and relatively cheap used. You could also buy a Fender tube combo and put a good stompbox like a Tube Screamer in front of it. They both wind up costing around the same and are both loud enough for gigs.
