is this a good amp? my b day is coming up and i would like to kno wether i should get this one or another one. i play metal and i like the metallica and dimebag sound and i heard that they used these amps.

Re: Randall RG1OO

I bought a randall rg200 in December from musicians friend for 380.00 So its the same one you want but louder. Yes its good for metal. The contour option helps you that. Any more questions about it?

Re: Randall RG1OO

Of course its a solid state amp and not a tube so the distortion has a "dry" sound to it just like all other solid state amps. The distortion on the amp is good but with a distortion pedal you will get what you want.

Re: Randall RG1OO

Since Dime used Randalls you can sound exactly like him if you want to, lol.

Re: Randall RG1OO

Not trying to but in here but not all SS amps sound DRY. Most SS amps do have a certain quality about them that makes them less desireable than a tube amp but as the old saying goes... not all tube amps sound great and not all SS amps sound bad. Try it for yourself and go from there.
By the same token I only own one SS amp a Randall RG 80 and I own three tube amps... Soldano Hot Rod 50, Koch Multitone 100, and a Marshall JCM 800 4104.

Your right not all SS are bad but pedal will always give you more tone. I have the randall 200 with out any pedals and its sounds great. Most sites will let you try it out for 45 days and if you dont like it return it. Its a great amp at an affordable price. You can't go wrong

I think you will be very happy with the RG100. I have played guitar off and on for 27 years...and the Randall is completely satisfying. I recently went a gear buying binge, and was ready to spend up to $850 on a 2x12 combo amp. The RG100SC was under $450. The stereo chorus is tame, and works better on the clean channel. People can talk about tubes all they want. I have a monsterous tube amp, but the RG100SC I have has so much great crunch...it is an amp for a newer era.

Good deals can be had on the recently phased out "G2" series.

The speakers are good, however I have made them "fart" on occasion as I am now getting into permanently down-tuned (standard D and C# tunings). The 200 watt RG200 has a set of heavier speakers and is the ticket for downtuners according to Celestion (the maker of both amp's speakers).

The crunch tone is fantastic...I never use an additional distortion pedal with my RG100SC. There is simply no need to.

Re: Randall RG1OO

Oh yeah, about that "dry" thing. I suppose this could be a generational perception.

Jazz heads thought that early rockers had crappy tone.
Rockers thought that hard rockers had crappy tone.
Hard rockers thought that punks had crappy tone (and thankfully, they did!).
Hair band rockers think the grunge sound was crappy.
Grunge players think the nu-metal sound is crappy.

In this case, "dry" is good! There is no way to Elvis Presley your way into sounding like Dimebag. Randall seems to be one of a few companies able to do "dry".

Re: Randall RG1OO

It's a solid amp for the cash. Actually, you should try to get an old one on ebay.

Re: Randall RG1OO

Seeing as I own the RG100SC (NOT THE G2 version which doesn't sound as good in my opinion), I can vouch for it being a pretty cool amp. The clean sound is really good for a solid state amp, and the chorus on it sounds great too. The gain channel is mostly a modern monster, but I've found I can get vintage-like tones on the Gain 1 setting with the gain low enough. You don't really need any extra pedals for good tones either, though I find my MXR 6-band EQ does a lot to help the distortion on the Gain 2 channel.

My gain settings are roughly Bass 6-7, Mid 7-8, Treb 5-7, with the contour anywhere from 8 to max, and it sounds great. With the mids and contour rolled back it can definitely pull off the Dime sound, especially since it's the amp he used, and Metallica sounds aren't a problem either.
