Guys I really don't know much about amps at all. I could really use your help, I gotta get something different than this small combo I have here. I want to start a band, and I want to start gigging. So I'm really gonna need some more volume and power. And of course, some wicked distortion.

So how about this for a head?

Please recommendations is what I'm looking for, I need some input!

I was also going to go for a DLX module in one position.

Assist!

I have never tried this amp but it looks really cool. And the reviews on the Musician's Friend page make it seem amazing. My recommendation is just try out as many heads as you can to see what you like. Not very helpful I know, but that's really all you can do. What kind of style are you looking to play?

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

I play metal, so i need a heavy tone for my distortion. Something that can provide some soaring leads too. So I guess all and all I want to cut through. Of course I always want to clean up my tone and play some clean jazzy licks.

But all and all I'm a metal kid. So I need some output. Something good for harmonics. That head grabbed my attention because of its versatility of tube selection.

I guess all and all Amps I have played through on this price range might be a Peavey XXX and it wasn't for me. So if anybody can help me from there. I found it lacking, but I didn't get to play it that long. But for the time I did, I didn't like it too much.

So I need something powerful. Please recommend any amps fond of some wicked metal tones.

Although yea that Randall head is an eye opener. It grabbed my attention for its price too.

Get a fender tube amp. Perhaps, the 40 watt DeVille.

And a distortion pedal.

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

You should buy one of those Randall's so you can let the rest of us know how you like it!:) I was looking at those also and I've seen some very good deals on ebay lately on some used ones but they were mostly combos. The idea of having multiple amp tones available with just sliding in a module is a great idea by Randall. Check Randall's website and see if there are any dealers near you. The dealer near me didn't have the MTS line so I couldn't hear one for myself.

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

I believe that Ty Tabor (King's X) fell in love with these amps while recording the most recent King's X album. I read an interview recently, but I don't remember where, where he raved about discovering them (after having many Famous Awesome Amp Manufacturers courting him). I think he's using them on tour too...

Good enough for Ty Tabor = Good enough for the rest of us!!!!!!

:bigthumb:

You really do have to get one just to tell the rest of us about it. Please?

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

Yep, Ty is using Randall now - and sounds WAY better nowl! Much more organic, alive grind to his tone! Ty goes from metal to clean and all points in-between; I would have to see if any articles mentioned what pre-amps he was using... The other feature that he raved about was the XLR outs - so he doesnt have to mic the cabs, he can feed direct to the board and have a cleaner stage set-up!

One of the best things you can do when looking for an amp is just get out there with your axe and test out anything and everything you feel like. And then of course, ask questions here. Feedback from others can be pretty important.

I saw the combo version of that Randall in a gear demo video. The modules blew my mind. I love the concept. Of the 3 mods that I got to hear, I was impressed.

A Fender Deluxe or Deville would definitly get you a great clean tone. And if you can get a distortion pedal that suits you, you'd be all set.

I'm also looking for a new amp, and am on a budget. Check out the Peavey ValveKings if you can. They're new, they're loud, and pretty metal.

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

My price range is fairly huge. I can afford that 950$ head. So lets say 750$ - 950$.

I'm also the kind of person who likes to just plug straight in and dig. I want to get a sound close to what I want. I'm very tempted to buy this Head and go for a cab. I think it would rock, but sadly I believe I would have to order it to test it and see how I would like it because around here finding that is a slim chance.

What intrigued me about it all is the fact that it had 3 custom modules that I could select for it. Along with its very dynamicaly sharp looks. It just appeals to me.

I was going to get the High Gain module, along with a Clean, and then the module that is reminicent to the Vox. Think that could be a good time ya know :)

More input please!!! Now you know my price range. I'd like to take advantage of my Tax return. Guitar vs Amp I think I'm going for a new rig. Cause I really just have a practice amp. And with what I have in mind, I need more.

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

I've played it and it sounds GREAT! I would have no qualms buying that amp.l My FAV modules are the extacy, and te top boost. The plexi also is great. I didn't play the mesa module, but I am sure it does the job.

Re: Randall RM100M 3-Module 100 Watt Head

From what I've read, it's hard to imagine not liking these amps, assuming you choose your modules wisely. Maybe that's the trick of it for you.

Maybe it would be a worthwhile time/money investment to take a day and drive to a big city with a Guitar Center and other (non-chain) stores where you could get your paws on some different gear? I don't know how far you'd have to go, maybe it's impossible. But nothing beats plugging your guitar into the gear and test driving.

Off-topic: Hey, Screaming in Digital: does your screen name come from the Queensryche album? Just curious. If so, then I'll buy you a beer sometime. Awesome album from an awesome band that is overlooked by many. Probably because it was followed by Operation: Mindcrime, and that kinda takes the cake. If that's not where your screen name comes from, then I'll just shut up and go hide in the corner.

Cheers

I could drive out of the way. Its just man I've got my guitars rigged out duncan style now I just need the right amp to back me up.

So yea I guess I may need to drive to louisville or somewhere.

But feel free to recommend any badass metal amps that could fuel my desire.

Hey WildStar, yes indeed, I take my screen name from the Queensryche song. I've only gotten to hear a few songs from the album, but I love them all thus far. I need to order that one soon. How could you blame people, Mindcrime is absolutely epic. No need to go hide, I'm glad you asked.

Righteous. You'll the love the album. The first three songs are bang, smack, crash: a 1-2-3 knock out.

OK, name your favorite: domestic, imported? Microbrews? Lager? Stout? I'm buying.

EDIT: oh, sorry Adam - don't want to hijack. I didn't know about the combos! A killer 2x12 combo might be the wise way to go, if this is your first big amp. A 100-watt half- or full-stack is LOUD and serious business. And often overkill, but that's a whole other argument going on in another thread somewhere. A combo like the Randall would really work for just about any gig. And any gig that was too big for an amp like that would have a PA and sound person anyways, so you'd be good.
