Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

This is a Tasmanian Myrtle Burl that I have been drying out for the last seven or so years....

It is extremely rare stuff. For a Myrtle to grow a decent burl it has to be old, probably only one in a thousand myrtles actually grow a burl.
The tree that it came from was dated at over 550 years old, This burl would have started out as a wound in the tree more than 200 years ago..Before the white dudes started roaming around..killing sh1t..etc..

the burl in its original slab form cost me nearly 700 bucks seven years ago, and that was from the guy that dragged it out of the forest..

finally its going to be a guitar..

The original burl was quite large, however a lot of it was useless sue to bark inclusions, this is the heart of the burl, bookmatched at 15 mm thick.

Don't be shy to post a whole heap more pics of this guitar either.

Is this your P-series guitar shape??

That's the second-nicest piece of wood I've seen today!

Keep those pictures coming. With that blank in your hands, great things are going to happen.

Excellent :).

Spalt and flame in one, now you're just too much.

Looking forward to seeing the finished products ;).

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

Beautiful. You could post a couple dozen more pix and nobody'd complain...
But DANG those are some awesome tops.

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

Yo Pete, Are you going to make matching Tasmanian Myrtle Burl knobs and jack plate? MMMMM Myrtle

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

yeah maybe,

Heres a pic with the neck blanks for all 3 guitars, one is Qld Maple/Myrtle/Purpleheart/Wenge/Purpleheart/Myrtle/Qld Maple
The other 2 are Qld Maple/Myrtle/Curly Maple/Purpleheart/Curly Maple/Myrtle/Qld Maple
and I have done a few test knobs with the Myrtle burl offcuts I had for knobs.. they should work OK...I hope....

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

You and Bluestone Guitars have probably cornered the market in Aus for flamed/burled and generally exotically patterned woods.

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

The funny thing is that I can see a few similarities in the way you guys do things. The laminated necks being one.

Re: Rare as Rocking Horse Poo..

I've done a little bit of building, but to contemplate doing something like that destroyer........its like an ego destroyer.
