OK, when I picked it up he described it better to me. It was the soldering at the big (concrete type) resistors for the tubes. He was saying it's not necessarily carvin's fault (or the previous owner). Companies were mandated around the time of this amp's production to use lead-free solder and as a result it just wasn't as strong. He's seen a lot of equipment with issues like that due to the use of lead-free/low-lead solder.

Yep, no doubt. F**K RoHS. They don't mandate the use of lead free solder in critical electronics (medical devices for example). I wonder why ...
It's more brittle, doesn't have the integrity and isn't as reliable as lead based solder. There are other potential problems like tin whiskers. We are stuck with it unless we DIY or buy from small builders.

Saving the children ... that lead based paint thing has already long been taken care of. That actually, could save a kid ... if he has a craving for paint chips. The hypocrisy in some of this stuff is unbelievable though. Don't get me started on the "green" cars and their Lithium batteries ...

If my kid had a thing for licking amplifier circuit boards I'd be just the tiniest bit more concerned about those big power supply caps than the solder.
