Re: RATT sound settings?

A JB pickup and a Marshall sounding amp works great for me.

I have a JB in an SL2H and it pretty much nails RATT through a POD 2.3. I prefer the first amp model (rectifier I think).

Re: RATT sound settings?

I used to have a really good one dialed in on my old Boss ME-8. No idea what the settings were. definitely less bass than I thought, more mids than I thought (JB might fix that), and of course, for Out of the cellar, chorus & delay are key. For Invasion, gotta get the right delay settings. Boss DD-3 would be the recommended tool there.

Try putting a 12at7, 12au7, or 12dw7 in the V1 of the preamp to help clean up the cascade and you should be able to dial it in easily from there.

Re: RATT sound settings?

um......english please.:smack:

you need to lower the gain of V1, the first preamp tube in the tone-generating stages.

from the factory, you have a cheap 12AX7/ECC83. you want to get a 12AY7/ECC82/5751 (different names for the same tube).

in all honesty, you could get better tone from your VK by swapping out several tubes.

go to www.dougstubes.com

tell him what amp you have and what tone you're going for and he can recommend a new set of preamp tubes. you can change these yourself just by unplugging the old ones and plugging in the new ones.

all depends on how long you plan on keeping the VK. if it's gonna be awhile, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade the speaker too with an Eminence Governor or something more British-sounding.

Ok, I just sent them an email.

If I do change out the tubes, would I have to get the amp reset to be able to use those tubes? or would i just pull out the old tubes, plug in the new ones, put in my guitar and play?

with preamp tubes, it's plug and play. you don't even have to turn the amp off (just put it on standby). power tubes require a rebias in almost all amps.

Re: RATT sound settings?

Is it really just me that thinks talking about tube swaps to get the Ratt sound is a bit over the top?

the Valve King combo has such a not-so-great gain channel that has too much drive and lacks definition. this makes it tough to get more classic tones. A few new preamp tubes can lower the gain, add some clarity, and make it easier to dial in an 80s hard rock tone.

we're not talking about trying to select tubes for playing Motley Crue vs tubes for playing Ratt . . . it's not that down in the weeds. that would be a little bit crazy :)

Re: RATT sound settings?

whew - was worried for a minute there! Thanks. I mean, geez - strat + JB + Digiteh RP = RATT in about 2 minutes....

I got it, cool. Message - old 80's dude should not buy valve king.

Re: RATT sound settings?

just a general statement here as i have no idea what Warren is using but... more and more of these 80's rockers still out there playing are using Line 6 style units to get their tones from years gone by... i could see why in some ways...

Re: RATT sound settings?

Yea, my Podxt seems to do the 80s tones in spades without much effort on dialing them in.

For heavier applications, I have to turn to my 6505 at least for rhythm.

i may buy a new 6505 soon... as a back up to my 5150... i'm also looking at up grading my modeler set up... i still only own an older POD 2.0....
