Re: Installing nickel covers on SD PUPS

I have two non-cover SD humbuckers installed on a guitar I recently acquired, an Alnico II and a Custom that I would like to install nickel covers on.

A) where to find the correct covers and good price to look for B) advice on doing the install so I dont create microphonic problems. Both PUPs are dead quiet held directly in front of a speaker on high gain. C) if i get them installed correctly, what changes in audio quality might I expect from them. Hoping this mod will sound as good as it does as is.

Any tricks of the trade to share re installing covers.

I'd leave it the way it is with no covers, but this guitar begs for covered pickups looks-wise.

Welcome Eric.
A)I have seen them in Bada Bing's (fellow member) ebay store (genuine SD covers) for $11 or $12.

B)As for the microphonic feedback, check out this thread: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=84175

C)The change in tone a cover makes has been debated on here for years. Some say it tames brightness by a barely noticeable amount, while others say they don't notice any change. I haven't done a direct comparison myself, but from what i have learned here there wont be a huge difference.

The effect of the cover depends on what it's made of under the plating.

Brass covers are tone killers. Nickel silver covers are extremely transparent. The Duncan covers are either nickel silver or some other alloy that has little to no effect on tone, so if you can get Duncan covers, do it.

Guitar Jones also sells nickel silver covers that are very transparent tonally.

Put a piece of masking tape over the slug coil to stop any microphonics. Other than that, you may or may not want to soulder (spelling?) the cover to the base plate, depending on how tight the covers fit.

Tone wise, you might experience a slight attenuation of the highs. Think of it as more of a warming up of your pup.
