Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

Just dreaming here...

If i was to ask a luthier to nicely re-route my Epiphone Wildkat, for a full-sized (non cover) humbucker, instead of the stock dogear P90-

what is the price range I'm expecting?

I don't like losing all that precious "koa"- but... I'd like to have a good full size HB, with series/paralllell/split switch-

if it doesn't cost me too much, or would "kill" the guitar.

Thinking about a Dimarzio "humbucker from hell" maybe.

Thanks

maybe I'll settle for a "mini humbucker"- that'd require some routing anyways...

the Bridge P90 is in to STAY- but for the neck, i want a series/parallell option. :)

Or, atleast replace it with a good P90. (i managed to kill my stock PU, unfortunately.)

If you went with a mini-bucker you wouldn't need to do any routing.

You could mount your mini-bucker pickups like they were mounted in a Les Paul Deluxe.

The Les Paul Deluxe was routed for P90's but used mini-humbuckers that were basically mounted in P90 covers cut out for mini-humbuckers!

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

You could run into two problems with the minis:
The rings may not totally cover any marks in the finish caused by the dogears,
At the neck pup, there isn't room for the mounting ring next to the neck/fretboard. Some routing would be needed even with a mini, to make room for the ring.

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

well...

There's just two holes, with mounting screw holes for the "dogears"-

No way to mount a "regular" P90, as it's a semi hollow. :/

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

Been thinking about stuffing a "Dream 180" hum-sized P90 inside the dogear cover, and put some "plastic jewelery diamonds" over the screw holes.

But I think that would bring the pickup way too far from the strings, and make it not work. :/

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

Is this an Epiphone WildKat P90?

If so, it seems to me that there'd be plenty of room to cut a dogear P90 mounting ring out for a mini-humbucker and drill it for the two height adjustment screws.

I'd buy a new one and modify it rather than ruin the one now in the guitar.

Maybe buy a couple because the first time I cut it out I'll make some mistakes and learn how to do it right.

The second time I cut it out it'll look right.

What?!

The Dream 180 is a full sized humbucker with 2 coils...not a bucker-sized P-90. It ABSOLUTELY will not fit inside a dogear cover.

Man you have put so much more thought and energy into this guitar than it deserves hahah no offense.

I love a stock Wildkat so much as it is that your whole journey here just kind of confused me. I'm not trying to be judgmental about it I just personally wouldn't do any mods to a Wildkat.

There are way too many cheap guitars that come with humbuckers for this to be worth the trouble in my humble opinion but hey man, live your life

Yeah, that's it

but a KOA top, and gold hardware :)

That's much because-

I've owned like 12-13 guitars and basses, acoustics, electrics-

a drumkit, two-three multitrack recorders, two complete PA's- everything

but lost it ALL! :( (sad story. I can tell you if you really want/need to hear).

now I only got this one guitar.

Therefore; I want to make the best of it :)

cheers

I had one, 2 coil, humbucker, in a "p90" size :o

Maybe I got it wrong about the name :).

So what did you decide? Mini-humbucker?

I'd buy a plastic P90 dog ear cover and cover it with a removable label or white tape so I could draw on it.

Then I'd draw the shape of the mini-humbucker on it.

It'd use a drill to create the rounded inside corners of the cut out and to drill the two holes for the height adjustment screws.

Then I'd carefully use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge to cut the rectangle out.

Mount the mini-humbucker and you should be done.

But there's always something!

Respect and solidarity, friend. Sorry you had to go through all of that. Rock the hell out of that thing.

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

TV Jones sells dogear adapters for their Filtertrons, and offer those in a remarkably wide range of voicings.

But yeah, the best advice is (still) probably to leave it be.

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

You would be better off leaving the Wildcat as a P90 guitar and looking for something else.

Re: Re-routing an Epiphone Wildkat P90- for a neck HB-

Rio Grande makes Mini-humbuckers with dog ear covers, as well as multiple P90s with dog ear covers.
