Read this if you like the Air Norton

I have been using Dimarzio Air Nortons as neck pickups for a long time, but I had an idea the other day that really paid off. I took my Air Norton from the neck of my RG1570 and put it in the bridge. For the neck pickup, I ordered an Air Classic neck. Wow! I am just blown away. I know it probably sounds silly but I never tried the Air Norton as a bridge pickup. I always thought it made a unique neck pickup but this thing is even better in the bridge.

It's not as bassy as a Tone Zone, and not as bright as a Norton. In the neck, it sounds very dark and smooth. As a bridge pickup, it's not dark and it's not as smooth. The output is also very good. It's not weak at all. The midrange is magical. It's like a Custom Custom that's a bit tighter with a little more bass, and airier and smoother. It has a smidge more bass than a PAF Pro. It's very warm but still cutting. It's like the midrange presence of the Norton is all there, but any harsh frequencies that might exist are smoothed out and airier. It's not as spongy as a Norton either. I would go as far as to say that it's a bit more versatile than the Norton overall.

I know some of you might think it's not bassy enough for metal, and indeed it's not a bassy pickup, but through a bassy amp like a Mesa Boogie or Engl, it doesn't lack any low end. It doesn't add any low end, which I like because I don't like pickups that add low end, but it also firms the low end up a little bit. Seriously, wow! A Mesa Boogie and Engl sound so good with an Air Norton in the bridge. It's also very good through my Blues Junior.

As for the Air Classic, well think of the typical complaints some people have about the Air Norton and fix them. That's the Air Classic. It's smooth and airy like the Air Norton, but not as dark. It's a bit more lively sounding as a neck pickup than the Air Norton, and it surprisingly keeps up pretty good with the output. Air Norton in the bridge has an output that's kind of in between a Pearly Gates and a Custom Custom. I would say that the Air Classic matches the output of a Jazz.

Together they make an amazing combo. Wait, there's more. I put the Air Norton in the bridge of my Les Paul Studio yesterday, and then in the bridge of my strat today. Indeed, it does make an incredible Les Paul bridge pickup. Think of a PAF 36th but just a tiny bit less bright. In my strat it was equally amazing. The strat I put it in is the brightest strat I have and while it doesn't necessarily warm up the strat to the point of no longer being bright anymore, it does smooth things out enough to where it's a shade less bright.

I did not trt the Air Classic in another guitar, but I might do that soon. The Air Norton went back into the bridge of my RG1570 tonight and it's going to stay there. Next, I'll be installing a nickel covered Air Norton/Air Classic set for my Les Paul Studio.

The AN is a great pickup in both positions. I've done that too. The ANS is the same way. Great pickup right there.

The Air Classics are favs of mine. I'm running a set in my PRS SE with great results. They just have that great sound to them. I can do a lot of different styles with them.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

Air Norton is a great mid-powered bridge pickup, and will do metal just fine.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

after reading this, I will swap the AN for an AC in my Ibanez prestige. thanks.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

Air Norton is probably one of the best pickups Dimarzio makes IMO. I have not testes it in the bridge but I have it in the neck of my self-made double-neck guitar. The lower neck is a 25 inch or something 6-string and it has AirNorton/Steve's Special setup and both sound killer but the Air Norton is especially good. The upper neck is 28 inch 7-string baritone with just the X2N-7 in the bridge capable of awesome riffage. I'd post pitctures of it but I don't have it at the moment.

It's very unusual pickups in a sense that it's low output but sounds high output, kind of best of both worlds. You get the fluid high-output kind of sound that is awesome for shred but yet it retains the openness of a low-output pick and is not compressed. Very cool.

As Dimarzio says, it was designed as a bridge pickup but then someone named John Petrucci used it as neck pickup and it was forever destined to be that primarily.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

Btw, how is the output of the AC compared to AN?

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

I´ve had an Air Norton in the bridge of my Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion for some years now. The pickup I changed from was a Gibson 490T, and at first I was not overwhelmed of the result. But after some time I realized it made the job: it gave some nice acoustic vibe blended with the stock neck pickup (a 490R) on low gain, and it had an open modern PAF sound on high gain - with the tone knob at 5. Open, not nasal, like many modern sounding pickups. No reason to change that one.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

the air classics are my favorite dimarzios. the AN in the bridge indeed sounds real good and very unique

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

I'll say one thing in relation to output. Even though the Air Norton and Air Classic, PAF36th, Bluesbucker, etc... are all rated lower output, they make up for the reduced output with a tremendous feel. Put simply, I wouldn't worry about the output because even though there is a slight audible difference, it still feels like you're playing a medium output pickup.

That's the great thing about Dimarzio vintage style pickups. With other brands vintage pickups, including Seymour Duncan, my pick struggles a little bit because of the dynamics. Vintage pickups typically make you dig in a little more to get louder dynamics and therefore don't always respond as well to styles that don't always require so much dynamics. Dimarzio vintage pickups have the same dynamics but it makes you work less to get them. Everything kind of pops right off of the string on command.

Btw, how is the output of the AC compared to AN?

It's hard to tell because I have my AC in the neck position. It's pretty loud and I had to lower it a little bit to match with the AN so I imagine it would be comparable to an AN in the bridge position.

Wonder how a guitar with an Air Norton in the bridge and Liquifire in the neck would be?

Dominus has it right. The Liquifire is pretty hot, as hot as the AN at least. I'd be more interested to test out a Liquifire in the bridge.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

It is a cool pickup, in either position. However, for solidbody duty in the bridge, I prefer it half-aired or full Norton. If you haven't tried it, take a regular Norton & just 'air' the screw coil w/it mounted next to the bridge. It is a great, versatile p'up that nicely splits the difference between AN & Norton.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

I have the AC/AN combo in my Yamaha RGX 820z and that combo is really versatile.

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

I can't remember when exactly it was that I saw this thread but I put the AN in the bridge of my Schecter last week and I am still floored by it. It has great tones all across the board! Replaced an Alt8 with it and I couldn't be happier.

We'll see if it goes back in after I try out a Custom/JB hybrid... Thanks UberMetalDood

Re: Read this if you like the Air Norton

All very interesting posts. I have an Air Norton and have been toying with the idea of replacing my PG+ with it. I have an alder Strat with a maple fretboard. I want to stick with 250k pots all around. I have mine wired not like a typical Strat. I have 1 master vol and master tone for all pickups; like a Tele. The other tone pot is there for looks.

I have been told various things about the Air Norton. Most have said to NOT use it in the bridge position. In fact, here's a quote from Frank Falbo from the DiMarzio forum. I trust Frank and he knows his stuff; but it's all individual ears and taste.

Exerpt from Frank:
Frank Falbo said:
I don't like the Air Norton in a Superstrat bout some do. To me it's got some hollow spots in the mids and is too glassy, even with 250k pots.
