reading schematics

Re: reading schematics

Might I suggest a home-study book from Radio Shack? Understanding Solid State Electronics is the title... I've had mine for years, but I think it cost me about $6... It starts of slow with analogies of water and moves on from there... by the end of the book, you should be able to understand and read complex schematics rather well!

I STILL have the book and refer to it quite often.... Well worth the $6

you might! :laugh2: I'll look into it

Thanks

Also, take a look at this website:

http://www.muzique.com/index.html

This is Jack Orman's website and is one of my favorites for basic guitar electronics info. Be sure to read all the articles under the "Lab Notebook" section. Then just peruse the website for any and all info.

Jack is very generous with his knowledge and experience.

Re: reading schematics

This is deep. MattPete has some good basics. Here's a start:

A transistor is just an electrical valve. You control current flow through it by adjusting the current control through the base.

btw - I'm not blowing you off here. Its just New Years, and all the crumb-crunchers just left. We're on our second bottle of Champa . . .Chem . . . Champgn . . .sparkling wine, and this will taker deeper thought than I have right now. ;)

With the collector and emitter designations on the faucet, the transistor would have to be a PNP but the schematic shows an NPN which should reverse the collector and emitter designations on the faucet.

Water analogies for electric circuits are all wet. Shocking!! :laugh2:

his "reverse power booster" is really cool! It's probably the only booster that sounds cool in design!

Re: reading schematics

I just caught up with you guys...was at friends for supper.

How is your brain doing so far, Cream123 ?
Any grey cells feeling a bit fried/crisp yet...hang on, they will....especially if you try some of the math. associated with the circuits (I always chicken out at that point).

Just gotta keep saying..."I can sort all this stuff out, I know I can do it".

IMHO, another good book is "Electronics for Dummies" (from the Dummies series). As you know, there is a ton of info. on the internet for free, I'm just old-fashioned and like to settle back with a book as I work with computers all day.

Good luck with what ever you decide to build.

Dave

+1 books about these things are always helpful. Study first, then understand, then build...

I think I'm starting to understand the basics of series/parallel circuits. I'm getting there. I tend not to like books to much but if I get into one I can read for hours and even days on end. I'll check some books out.

Thanks
