Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

I just saw this video:

All he's done is flip the control plate around and rewired it so that the volume control is first, then tone, then the pickup switch. It would really make adjusting volume and tone a lot easier, for a player like myself anyway. Such a simple, but good idea.

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

Yeah, I like that arrangement better myself. For some odd reason I haven't done it on mine...

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

That's how the Blacktop tele's come stock, and also the squier J5 tele. It is a pretty cool mod though.

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

My Tele was wired like that when I bought it. First thing I did was put it back, so I guess it isn't for everyone.

I hear ya–I've seen some right-handed Strats with a left handed tremolo...to each his/her own. I just started a Strat project with Tele routing and I like this wiring because I like to roll the volume knob when I play.

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

I've always thought the blade switch on the tele was slightly cumbersome to operate. I've seen some plates that have the switch at an angle, which makes it better, but I think every 2 pickup tele ever would benefit greatly from a LP-type toggle switch. That way, you could put it at whatever angle you want, and I just like the feel more personally.

I agree, I've seen the angled switches and like them but the LP-type would be more versatile.

You know I've always wanted to do that but I still find the switch is just a tad too close to the knobs. I would prefer for the switch to be moved back far enough for me to get my finger in between the switch & the knob....

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

Bill has not rewired anything. The entire transformation can be performed using screwdrivers and a spanner.

Never felt the urge myself. I have long fingers. I can do the Speedy West simultaneous volume and tone control swell tricks with the knobs in their conventional positions.

Sounds like you would benefit from buying a blank control plate and drilling it for a LP style switch. Without the blade switch you have more room to access the knobs.

Pretty true, though it would be a lot neater and pull on fewer wired if it were actually rewired, rather than just turning the switch around and reversing the position of the pots.

Still very cool.

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

I also agree that, regardless of which whether the control plate is installed normally or reversed, in one position the switch tip is too close to the tone knob. I would never use an LP style 3-way switch, though, because a 4-way Tele switch is just too awesome.

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

My "tele" came stock with 2 volumes, no tone.. bridge volume first. and it has a 3way like an LP. I reversed the knobs the other way round this past weekend, while it was apart, just to see which I like better. I really like the LP style 3way though... still no tone knob lol..

Re: Really cool, simple telecaster mod:

I've had my Tele like that for a few years now. I greatly prefer it. Especially since I'm mainly a Strat guy, and am used to having the volume right next to my hand.
