Really getting inot the 4x10 open back cabinet

Ive been playing my Sunn head and my '66 Blackface Bassman through the 4x10 tweed cabinet and I am really loveing this tone for these two amps, much more so than a closed back 4x12.
I have a question , that I wonder if anyone has any opinion about. If and when I sell the tweed Bassman copy, will a good 2x12 ported cabinet with some Fender style 12"'s work about as well as the 4x10 open back? I',m thinking I may have to pickup up just another 4x10 blackface empty reiisue orSuperreverb cabinet and just set the head on top, THat would look stupid, so Im not thrilled about that. There are some closed back 4x10 cabinets made by Bogner and Marshall i could modify the back to be partially open . I also suppose I could take one of my empty Marshall 4x12 cabinets and make a partially open back -cabinet useing plywood for the back, and load it with 4x12 Jensens, but again, I'm wondering if that will get me that spanky throaty and percussive punch of the 4x10 to any reasoanble degree?

I love 4x10 since I can actually fit it in my corrolla...had one once but it looked stupid cause my head was too big when it sat on top...

You won't have to worry about that too much longer Happy Dude . Soon youll be trying to find out how big of an amp will fit into the trunk of a bMW 740i or a Mercedes S Class! :1:
If ya wanna pull chicks, got to have the groovy Batch pad and the Mercedes...then casually mention your a lawyer and bingo bango! Just don't fall in love with the first ten that lays some on ya. Have a little fun and play the field.
BTW, i just went off topic on my own thread! Thats gotta be a first. lol

Hey Jer, I've got a 4 x 10 with a semi open back and it's truely massive sounding. Figure this... when I got it I still had my tall Mesa 4 x 12. While the mesa sounded ok when I stood right in front of it, that was it. Once I got the 4 x 10, the difference was unbelievable, very BIG and open sound... no more complaints from my band mates not being able to hear me. To be fair I think the mesa can was clearly designed and voiced for their amps... where the Mongotone 4 x 10 sounds great with the amps I've tried... Cornford, Fender, Marshall and Carvin.... can't speak for Mesa amps though.. I think you need a 4 x 12 for those. Just for your info I once tried porting a back for a 4 x 12... my old Orange, and it sounded sh!te? So don't butcher an original cab back panel... get a new panel and play with that.

Re: Really getting inot the 4x10 open back cabinet

Depending on who made that Bassman clone cab it's likely pine and if it is then you are hearing a difference between closed back vs open back as well as 10's vs 12's but you're also hearing plywood vs pine...open back pine speaker cabs are an amazing thing...

Think about all these factors before you go out a puke up more money on more gear...

Re: Really getting inot the 4x10 open back cabinet

I have opened the back of al my cabs but one. I no longer like the closed back sound. I have snatched up a couple 70s PV cabs I got for 50$, they are great sounding cabs, heavy duty... I jig sawed out the back side, and they are GREAT. I was just playing my 68 Bassman through one yesterday, the sound was big n giant.

Re: Really getting inot the 4x10 open back cabinet

I was thinking about getting an open back 4x10 cab for my Bandmaster Reverb...I think it would sound killer. BTW, who is a good, reliable source for cabs? I'm thinking small builders, not Avatar or the like. It's worth a few extra bucks to have an artist craft one (IMHO)...
