Really Old Home Recordings

First time I've posted a tune here, and it's the last tune I did, 10 years ago in my old home studio.....more like cubase in a cubicle..lol. Worst mixing environment and equipment imaginable (as in my car...lol).

While I've got a few other tunes with vocals (I'm no vocalist), this is probably my best work musically, although this one's not really as complete as my others: just a shell waiting for vocals and a few extra instrumental touches.

Crap, just realized the link includes two other tunes...with vocals. Ouch...proceed with caution. Don't Go is the one worth listening to...I think.

Hmm...thoughts anyone? Can't be that bad...lol. Don't Go starts out kinda slow, but it eventually kicks in. May not be most people's cup of tea stylistically, but I thought the mix came out ok for a low-fi bedroom effort...lol. Sure, the keyboard bass is under mixed, the drums are programmed, and I'm no star on the guitar, etc, etc, but I did my best with what little I had.

And the irony is that now I have an 18 year son who's an incredible drummer, a new n12/cubase setup, and a correctly treated recording/mixing environment (not auralex), yet no time for anything music related because of work and a baby. Oh well, one day. And it's really for my son anyway.

Hey, thanks! What's nuno, a band? Is this good or bad? Never heard of them.

I have to say I've always made a point to try not to sound too much like anyone else, for better or for worse..lol. I just write what I like...and usually end up not liking it so much later.

And sorry for being ignorant, but what is "DI'd"?

Hey, just noticed your band link. Cool stuff. Man I gotta start listening to anything but the radio..lol. Too much different stuff out there. Don't know why I don't start (could be my ADD), cause the stuff I write doens't sound much like anything I listen to.

I really liked exhortation of the heights.

Nuno Bettencourt is the uber-guitarist from the band Extreme.



DI = Direct injection; when you take your guitar's output and plug it directly into your recording interface/amp modeler/etc.

Ah, ok, extreme, I've heard of them and only recall that one softer duet/hit they had (early 90's?), which I..mmm...don't like. Musically accomplished, but not my style. But the link you sent, while also mellow, sounded pretty cool. I'll try to check out more of their heavier stuff.

Everything I recorded around 2002 was with a parker nitefly (reverend rocco rthymn on Alone though) through a variety of OD pedals into a 4x12 deville, mic'd. Not ideal at the time, but all I had. Since it was a townhouse, I used a hot plate to drive the tubes. Funny though, because now I actually like the thick OD on Don't Go. For You I used a metal zone, ugh, but all I had for a high gain sound. And I've never liked the sound of direct recordings; I like how speakers affect the sound. Of course nowadays there's probably modelling software for that.

I hand programmed drums with an LM4. Very time consuming. Now my son walks in and does it in one take in 5 minutes...lol...and sounds a billion times better, especially all the mics we use and room setup.
