Reaper guys, I need a hand

ginormous

Understatmentologist
I'm trying to finish a project, but I need some backup.

Anyone who can do good horn parts? I need a section -- tenor and alto saxes, trumpet, trombone, and (just maybe) a flute on top, to double the trumpet part an octave higher.
I'm going for a sound similar to this:

Here's what I've got so far. Needs vocals, but I'm fighting a wicked sinus infection.

Working on lead sheets, and I'll send a zip of my Reaper project file if you have anything to share.

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

I can't do it, but if I could I know I would be able to orchestrate better horn fills as counterpoint to the vocal melody.

Good luck with the project. The keyboard part sounds great!

Laz, I've heard some things affirming your comment. Unfortunately, my sinuses won't let me cut even a scratch vocal.
I sound like Eddie Murphy doing Buckwheat when I'm clogged up. I'll have to wait a few days.

I completely understand. The #1 thing I hated about gigging was having to sing when I had a cold or otherwise felt under the weather ... anything that would compromise my ability to sing as well as I normally would (which in my case, really wasn't very well).

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

Is that you playing the electric piano on the song? If so, can you not use soft synths and arrange the horns yourself?

I am not a Reaper guy, but would be willing to help w horn parts. There are a bunch of ways we can do it. PM me if you're interested.

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

Those keyboard parts and drums were input one note at a time, one mouse-click at a time.
My right index was spasming after a week, from all the clicking I did.

The virtual horns I have (samples and rompler VSTs) don't quite get there.
Added to this is that I don't have a friggin' USB keyboard.
It's a royal B trying to get a sax sound to bend, or glide up to the note, if all you have is a mouse.

(Old guy on the porch: "Excuses, excuses. You kids and your computers... when I was touring with Sheena Easton, all we had was a cassette 4-track PortaStudio!")

Hehe, roger that.

Well, I have an actual education in music and would love to put it to use.

Cool beans! Let me get some kind of ½-a**ed scratch vocal on there, so you can hear what I'm aiming for.

I can re-do it when I get unclogged.

*nods* That's why I picked up a MIDI pickup... Now, if only I could figure out which guitar to mount it to... ;)

Song sounds great... bass could be brought up a hair...

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

MIDI sequencing and ROMpler sound sources are fine for developing an arrangement. Transfer the finalised parts to manuscript. Have humans play the parts.

Sometimes, a mixture of ROMpler and human is enough to fool the ear.

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

are you after a chart so you can record real horns?
Id like to help out. it would be great if you can do a guide melody first tho, bad vocals or guitar are fine and ill write the parts around it.
Im not much good with midi, but sheet music i can definitely help out with.

Re: Reaper guys, I need a hand

That's a great start, gibby... I'll lay down some "drowning cat" vocals today.

FF, good call. I've seen and heard doubling of horn parts with all kinds of things: Hammond organ, harmonica, analog synth, samples, even live violins.

My sheet music software is too "dumbed down" to transpose the MIDI part I did for the Rhodes into the proper key.
It only reads as open G clef (=concert C), even though the tune starts in F Major, and modulates to G Major in the coda.

I pulled back on the synth bass, so it wouldn't swamp over everything else. It's a freeware Minimoog plugin, and it's as good as anything I've heard from the big guys.
