Rebel vs Tweaker?

Ive read that people prefer the overall tone of the tweaker over the rebel.

Have anyone compared the two?

Re: Rebel vs Tweaker?

it was not side to side but I did try the rebel 20 for a while before buying a tweaker.
as I said in another thread both have a sort of distinct midrange that makes them sound kinda unique and very "egnator", somehow not exactly like a fender, mesa, vox, marshall, orange, etc.

anyways I didn't like the rebel 20's wattage control, it takes too much treble and dynamics out as it's turned down. It looses any richness, more so than amps I've played with a pentode/triode switch.
also the rebel's power tube blending didn't wow me. I only liked it on all el84 or all 6v6. in between just seemed to cancel out the good qualities of each tube type and leave you with something that doesn't really remind me of any familiar or famous tones...
When you get the gain wound up it's a little fizzy.

the tweaker struck me as less compressed but both amps feel kinda hot and compressed. The tweaker is more versatile, you can get more flavors of clean and dirty but with no way to footswitch the voicings or the modern/vintage modes, it feels like a let down. I would have loved to footswitch from usa clean to british dirty and so forth.
Overall the tweaker is warmer and more complex but both amps are not amazing in the complexity compartment and thats why I think a blues Jr beats the tweaker USA mode, an ac15 beats the ac mode, and a tiny terror beats the brit mode... the tweaker will give you lots of decent tones in one amp but too many switches can be distracting and I'm a fan of simpler plug and play amps now.

The tweaker is great for the price though especially cuz it does so much, while I think a few amps like the ones I mentioned sound better at the same price point they aren't as versatile, they seem like one trick ponies in comparison.

thnx for the input FG4. how would u describe the difference in tone between the el84 and 6v6? is the 6v6 more plexi marshally?

Re: Rebel vs Tweaker?

I had a Rebel 20 for about a week after previously owning a Tweaker. The Rebel didn't impress me. The Tweaker sounded bigger, clearer, and more lively.
