Re: recessed or non-recessed floyd - What do you like??
If you want a floating Floyd, why would you intentionally limit the upward range?
Range really isn't an issue unless you were going Jack Butler on it and holding/shaking the whole guitar by the bar.
It's more about how far you prefer the strings to sit over the body and if or if not you prefer any pitch to the neck.
Even on a non-recessed floyd the strings won't sit as high off the body as they do on the typical LP/hardtail, but still a good bit higher than a recessed.
There's a subtle difference between top-mount and recessed when it comes to hand/arm positioning.
On a back-angled neck (top-mounts often are) your left elbow can stay just a little closer to your own body,,,,,,,I like that.
On a recessed your right elbow can stay closer,,,,,,I like that too, so for me it's a trade-off, but I prefer recessed overall.
Important to note; (IMO)
On a top-mount with back-angled neck you should not set the floyd's base parallel with the guitar's body, you should set it parallel with the strings so that when you sight down the strings (looking from nut to bridge, like looking down a pool-cue for straightness) the bridge angle should match the string's angle.
