Recomend me a mic for my cab!

Should I just go with the tried and true Shure SM57? Amp is a goosed up JCM800 into a 4x12 with green backs and splawn big blocks. Hard rock/metal tones. What say you?

SM57 FTW. Unless you're looking for something significantly different, it's tried, true, and cost-effective.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

The SM57 is the industry standard, but I've been been happy with the two Sennheiser e609 Silver mics I own.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

The nice thing about starting with an SM57 is that if you get it and find some qualities it may impart that you don't like, pretty much everyone has used one so it'll be easy to find what would suit you better.

I like the pair I use, for what it's worth. I recorded this with one on each speaker in my cab (C. Rex and Texas Heat) about 6-9" away from the grille. I ran straight them into an Mbox Mini to Garageband and panned each one hard right/left and used no eq/fx/anything, just the dry tracks. This recording really captures the vibe of the Big Muff into the Bassman nicely, I'd say that's pretty much what it sounds like when I stand in front of it and let my pant legs ripple in the breeze.

Cool beans. I'll grab a 57 and maybe later an e609. Those two seem like staples, and they're both not crazy expensive.

I goofed around with a carvin kick drum mic, and it was ok. It was laying around. Not ideal, but worked.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

The SM57 is always a good choice. The e609 is great too, I got great results from it with a DSL and cab loaded with Classic Lead 80s. I have also used the Beta 57A and liked it too, but I preferred the e609 to it. I have been using a Superlux PRA-628MKII which sounds almost identical to the e609 and for a lot less. I also have had great luck with the CAD D189, which I can honestly say has gotten some of my best recordings.

Good luck!

I use the audix, senheiser and shure mics...the latter is most durable. Very close call but senheiser seems most sensitive and articulate for instrument speakers. On drums the audix mics are great when working but a little more vulnerable to small problems when used often. Shure is my last choice of the 3 but a very close call. But, it's also the spare I keep available all the time because it is an absolute workhorse. If all 3 worked all the time I would prefer the sound from senheiser. All 3 are great mics and there's got to be a reason why the industry (and affordable choice) standard is Shure. Remind your sound engineer not to forget phantom power since they are condensor mics and you should do fine with any of the mics described above.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

The e609 is especially nice for playing live, since you can just dangle it by the mic cable without using a stand. If this is for recording you should probably put it on a stand anyway, but it's still a great mic for your amp.

My standard approach for recording a high gain tone is an e609 about two inches from the center of the speaker, and an MD 421 about two inches from the edge of the speaker. The two mics complement each other, and you get more low end punch than with just the single e609.

I'm of the belief that the SM57 is pretty good, but there are better choices for almost every application, including guitar amps.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

Another +1 for the SM57. By itself it might sound a little dry but after multitracking in a mix it works very well. I'm tracking for a 5-song EP now and I have the 57 pointing straight on at the edge of the dust cap on my V30, and a Sennheiser MD421 an inch out from the dust cap on the Mesa C-90. For everything from cleans to mild and heavy overdrive this combo has punch and gives me everything I could want in a recorded sound. We do a lot of higher gain stuff and I can really hear the Mark IV power.

If you're on a budget grab a 57 and start tracking. If you can afford to pick up another mic, I'd highly recommend the 421

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

Do you by chance have the ability to try both?

57 is, well awesome.

What interface are you recording with?

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

The SM57 is good but I slightly prefer the Sennheiser E609 and Audix I-5 for home recording.

For a little more money, the Beyerdynamic M201 is even better.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

If the amp sounds good, any of the mentioned mics will sound great with the right mic placement. That is what is crucial.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

+1 on the Sm57 and MD421 combo. 421 is a little pricey in comparison but I picked up a used one (a U5 version too) for just under $200. Used this combo on my jcm800 many times.

The e609 is good too, and more cost effective, but I find it can be a little too bright/ harsh on certain amps.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

An e609 and an sm57 sound great when used together at the same time.

Re: Recomend me a mic for my cab!

If it's a one-mix setup you can't go wrong with an SM57. It is the most neutral among all of the possible ones. Some other mics are brighter some are smoother but none is as versatile as the SM57 that also works perfectly for vocals (with a pop filter), blow instruments, snares, toms and hi-hats. When mic'ing a cab I always have an SM57 around the edge of the dust dome among other mics pointing other positions.
