Recomend me a pick up for c standard fuzz

Hey guys,

I have an epiphone sg i want to upgrade the pick ups on.

I have it currently set up in c standard using ernie ball not even slinky 12 - 56s.

I play more stoner/desert rock type music. No metal!!

I am after a pick up thats gonna sound great with my big muff which drives most my sound using a touch of amp gain for that bit extra. Im using orange cr120 amp at the moment.

I find the stock pick ups can sound a bit "farty" during lower notes. I need something thats going to sound great in this lower c tuning and still sound rock. Even pushing a little mids through.

Recomendations would be great thnks guys.

PAF class Humbuckers seem to work well for that style. One of the potted varieties like the 59, Pearly Gates or even Whole Lotta Humbuckers could be cool.

Welcome to the Forum!

I agree with the above. Either go with something PAF-y, like a 59, or Pearly Gates. Or, a pickup that is sort of designed for that style, the SLUG.

You want something that sounds good clean, has a decent amount of mids and a tight bass. The Big Muff sucks all the mids out of the sound and add a booming bass, so you've got to normalize that. You don't need a hot pickup because of how much gain the BM has.

Any suggestions? I dont know alot about pick ups.

They're pricey, but the Burstbucker Pro's in my Les Paul handle down tuning great

I'm not a fan of hot pickups, but you might like a JB or Custom Custom. They clean up well when you roll back the volume. For even lower output, try the Dimarzio 36th PAF. They're more middy than other PAF types, and that can help somewhat with what gets sucked out.

Another option is put a Tubescreamer type pedal after the BM. Just remember to keep the gain down.

For the record, the heaviest downtuned band I know is Kowloon Walled City. They're tuned to dropped Bb. Scott plays an Edwards LP with a Phat Cat, and Jon plays an LP Deluxe with mini-humbuckers. So it's not necessarily about output and "made for downtuning". It's how you use it.

if you want to tune down to C you might want a better defined pickup. I have a Tele tuned to C to play stoner, I only use amp dist using a booster, and the best pickup I've found for that is the Duncan Custom, period.
It has the definition you need on bass without muddy up everything and it's not that hot as you could imagine, It has to my ears better mids than an A5 pickup under growling distortion too, it's a bit strange on the high end but if you play stoner I bet that you already cut some highs as I do
