recomend me some slide songs

i already figured out in my time of dying, and ive started working on some of my own slide songs.

i still need to learn some of the basics, and how to play a bit of lead or at least a fill on slide

reccoment some "standards" or just plain good slide songs that are pretty simple (im still having difficulty holding the slide right so it dont buzz) so i can get an idea of slide playing, and figure out some cool stuff

i find it easier to learn a technique of playing by playing it, rather than trying to learn how to do it.

Re: recomend me some slide songs

I would say for one, listen to some Allman Brothers Band and ZZ Top songs. Lots of slide-work there. Another artist is J.J. Cale, who wrote a song called "Crazy Mama" that has some easy to learn slide work in it. Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" is another, as well as some of his songs he did with The James Gang like "Funk 49." David Gilmour of Pink Floyd doing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" has some nice licks.
Hope some of this helped. Good luck and slide-on!

Re: recomend me some slide songs

" Tush " > ZZ
Lots of stuff off of "Layla" > Clapton ( Duane Allman is all over this Baby )
Almost anything from George Thourogood ( Think " Bad To The Bone " )

Re: recomend me some slide songs

Seems like me and Ol Bob are thinkin alike on this thread. :cool3:

Re: recomend me some slide songs

Ry Cooder. There's no one better. The albums he did with John Hiatt (Little Village and the one with Memphis in the Meantime and Lipstick Sunset on it) have some beautiful slide guitar work. Earl Hooker was one of the greats.

Also some of the early Rolling Stones albums: Little Red Rooster would be fun to learn...and easy. Brian Jones was very good!

Learn your open tunings: E (EBEG#BE), D (DADF#AD), G (DGDGBE) & A (EADAC#E).

Practice some scales using those tunings so you know where the notes are.

The sweetest tones are between the 5th fret and 12th fret, IMO.

All great!

One more tip: I took a few dobro lessons from one of the greats, Sally Van Meter.

One thing Sally suggested was to lay off of the high string and learn some melody on the middle four strings. She also told me that Jerry Douglas (the most recorded Dobro player of our times) actually removed the high E string on his guitar for awhile to force himself to NOT play all his melodies on the high string. And to force himself to learn to find melodies on the other strings.

Most mediocre slide players base most of thier licks around the high E and B string...try not to limit yourself to that.

Also, play what you hear in your head...not just the notes that fall easily under your slide. It'll help you find your own voice and your own melodies instead of all the standard cliches we've heard a jillion times.

And...learn to use " Blue Notes ". Say you're sliding on the D string to the 12th fret, do that...then, slide on the D string and stop JUST BEFORE the 12th fret. You'll notice a slight tonal difference. This is a " Blue Note ". " Blue Notes " make for nice tonal differences when playing slide. :cool2:

Re: recomend me some slide songs

"One way out" is a good place to start. It's one the easier slide tunes
to learn. Practice your damping technic. I lay my palm across the bridge
to help keep those unwanted strings from ringing, And I wear the slide
on my ring finger this way I use my index and middle finger to dampen
the strings behind the slide. Also practice slideing into your note.
Use the frets as landmarks. Listen to plenty of Allmans,Duane was the Man!
But Warren Haynes and Butch Trucks are real good. Another underated
Slide player is Robbie Kreiger from the Doors. One of the 1st Slide tunes
I learned was "Moonlight Drive" :)

Re: recomend me some slide songs

A good thing to practice playing slide is to learn to play with your fingers. So much is done with the right hand. If you are just learning; think of your right hand as 3 fingers. If you want to pick the "D" string and try to keep the other strings silent, place your thumb on the "A", and your middle finger on the "G". You will do most of your picking for single notes with your Index finger. A great video that covers much of this tecnique is Warren Haynes video on Slide. Listen to Warren He is amazing!! all the other guys mentioned here also.

Check out Derek Trucks' solo albums. Derek's an amazing slide player and also has a lot of slow, soulful stuff that's easy to pick out.

Run Run Run by Jojo Gun.

Great suggestions above too :)

Re: recomend me some slide songs

Thanks for those cool open tunings, Lew! I've used the "D" tuning before many times, but not the others.

Re: recomend me some slide songs

Here's some other good slide guys:

George Harrison (unique and melodic tone and phrasing)
Johnny Winter (Johnny's great... always comes out both guns blazin'!)
Muddy Waters (a true legend... )
Furry Lewis (less known about, but another genuine blues hero)
Ellmore James (mandatory slide study here)
Joe Walsh (Rocky Mountain Way... great tune to learn from)
Bonnie Raitt (love her slow southern phrasing... great style!)

Also of interest: Bob Brozman, Richard Peikoff... both these guys explore the world music side of things. Brozman has been to India, Mauritius, and all over. Peikoff recently did an album in India. Very different from the Delta sound, but quite interesting.

Re: recomend me some slide songs

Get a haircut by George Thorogood if you want something really easy to get yourself started (which helps).

If you want the top end of blues rock stuff, check out Dave Hole. The guy is a Freak!!!!

Re: recomend me some slide songs

yeah, Brozman is cool ... I saw him at NAMM years ago doing demos for National, singing some hilarious Hawaiian stuff, and just playing outrageous slide - his thing is a whole other planet

Re: recomend me some slide songs

There's a lot of fun stuff to play on "Exile on Main Street."

Re: recomend me some slide songs

i'm suprised no one mentioned learning to play "in my time of dying" by led zepplin. that song rules!
