Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
I'm looking for a bone-stock no-frills Stratocaster. Squire, Fender MIM, I don't care.

Just something with three single coils and is a Strat.

HB in bridge is ok, if it splits.

Go! And be specific....

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

Squier Classic Vibe 50s or 60s are both pretty great, depending on what specs you want. They can both be had new for $400. They often show up used for less than $250.

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

Squire Classic Vibe Stratocaster...try both 50s and 60s...high quality build and the tonerider pickups do a very good job....

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

Squier Standard Strats are fine IF you are willing to complete the fret finish that should have been done at the factory and replace the pickups. I have two that sound as good as my Highway One and American Special strats.

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

But seriously folks....if you shop around you can pick up a used USA strat for ~$700...you get the real deal....why be cheap when your talkin' under a grand and resale is ~purchase price...

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

With the quality that Squier is putting out these days, it is worth investigating. Especially if you are going to mod it over time, it gives you a great guitar to start with.

Because:

$700
I'm not reselling
I don't really play Strats
$700

However...I saw a number of things in that zone I could be really happy with.

Give the pool man a seven month vacation...clean and chemicalize the pool yourself...bingo $700 for a real strat...in the long run you'll be saving money...

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

You can pick up an American Standard for as little as $500 used, but you are still talking about twice what a used CV goes for. You can even find MIM strats fairly cheap used as well.

No point spending more than you have to in order to get an occasional sound. You can always upgrade later if you decide you must have a nice strat.

I had hard time figuring out what to answer this...

1 How many people that would consider buying a squier has a pool?
2 You really think many have a "guy" to take care of that pool??

You really live in clouds. If 700 dollars are not big money for you, good for you.

Squiers are just as real strats as any. You're not getting a perfect guitar, but you can get a good starting point if you're willing to do some work on it.

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

Squier SE Strat. Full sized body, decent frets that can be finished at home, and they look and sound the part after some mods. My brother bought one that's surprisingly nice. I see them in pawn shops around me all the time for under a hundo.

This is his SE (with a Rio Grande Stelly in the bridge) next to my MIA strat. Screenshot_20180624-172218.jpg

I have a big @$$ pool. I have an $8k Gibson Custom shop Les Paul.

I also as you said - want the "occasional sound." $50 or $5000, they will all sound the same when I play them. No need for a badge or brand. Just one that does what it is supposed to. Just needs to be playable after adjustments and stay in tune. I can handle the rest.

Re: Recommend a cheap Stratocaster

A nice, resonant Squier CV or Deluxe with good pickups, and maybe an upgraded trem unit like a GFS, is more than good enough for a Strat non-enthusiast.

Give those a go.
