Recommend a digital multimeter?

Help! I need some help figuring out which DMM to get. Looking at Radio Shack, Sears Craftsman, Extech, and Fluke. Just ordered a Princeton-type amp kit, and plan to build/mod more in the future, but don't want to spend a fortune (Fluke) if I don't need to. I think that I need up to 700 volts AC (just in case) but don't know if "RMS" is a necessity.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on specs I'll need or specific recommendations.

Mine is an Extech (from radioshak) and I love it. I haven't built an amp yet, but I'm thinking hard about it. It has RMS built in IIRC. It also tests capacitance (nice feature) and I think it should handle the voltage you're talking about (though that seems a bit high for most tube amps as 600 volts is the most I've heard of actually being used in an amp. Got it in sale for $60 or so IIRC.

Thanks buddy!

The voltage specs seem to be either 400 or 700, but RatShak and Sears don't display that spec :argh:

This topic came up awhile back. Fluke got high props for their meters.

I did a search on "multimeter" and "dmm", but only in "Amplifier Central". Silly me - there was a very useful post from 2004 in the "Guitar Shop". Got the specs I need, now I just have to find a good deal on one...

Fluke hands down. Military buys 'em, I've used 'em, NEVER had a problem with them, and I've been doing avionics work on aircraft for approximately 4 years.

Sorry to double-reply, but I just saw the part about RMS. My opinion is that you really don't need it. All you should need is ohms, volts, and possibly current (amps), in my opinion. You shouldn't really even need digital, but it IS helpful to have the ohms + horn ability so that you hear a honk if there is continuity. My two cents.
