recommend combo for Led Zep?

hey bros, im set for clean tones with my Twin Reverb (duh) but im looking for another amp i can A/B between and i'm looking for a 1x12 tube combo to handle my overdriven/lead tones i need. I'd prefer something no more than 40-50 watts, and something with a british/marshall flavor (el34 or el84 will be ok), for a Led Zep type tone (yea yea i know page probably used nothing like what im describing but i'm just referencing that type sound). I will be running only my Duncan Tweak Fuzz into this amp with my Tele, and i'd like to get some tube overdrive/fuzz interaction going on, so thats why i'd prefer something lower wattage. In other words, i'd like something i could crank up a bit and not be overly loud, as i only run my Twin around 4-5 on the volume (which is still a lot of ooomph as many of you know, but i dont want an overly intense lead tone, something that will match well volume wise with a Twin set for clean).

I'm definately looking to pick something up used, and i'd really like to keep it under $600, more so around $400-$500. I'm not too much a snob about anything, as long as its not something really cheap/unreliable. Any weird old amps are ok, as well as current stuff. I'm not too picky. Just can't afford to go for something super expensive, as i don't know if i'd even appreciate the differences anyways :D.

any ideas are welcome.

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

My Traynor YCV 20 can get the old Zep sound. It's got el84 tubes like the old marshalls so that probabl helps.

They have a 15 and 40 watt version.

The clean channel is good too. It has a bright switch which can get those chimey fender like tones

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

if you're running the twin at 4-5, you're most likely gonna be crankin that other amp

i say traynor ycvblue

with the EL34's & v30 it should get you a nice brit tone

well, i have the Twin at that point where it has gotten loud, but right before its gets tremendously loud :D. on mine, that lies somewhere around 4-5, its very sensitive.

ill look into the Traynor.

Really most EL84 or 34 based amps will be good. I run a Fender Blues Junior and I can get a LZI/II sound. Very nice.

The Crate Palominos are great, and the 15 watt one gave me a great classic rock tone even at lower volumes. It can do Zep, Cream, and Hendrix quite easily.

Another good one, and very cheap too. There's a lot of good choices for you, flank. I'd love to hear your rig in stereo, maybe some Thank You.

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

Actually, for the first Zep record, Page used the psychedelic Tele and a Supro amp, so don't discount the combos. Maybe a JTM45 type combo?:fingersx:

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

Yeah, I wouldn't go for any DSL/TSL marshalls. Personally, I wouldn't go for any Marshalls, because I feel you can get a better tube combo for less. Definitly check out the Traynor. 50watts may be a little overkill, but it's got a nice drive. I'd still check out the Blues/Pro Junior (Blues junior has a MV), Crate Palomino, I'm not sure what kind of tubes they run, but check out the Peavey Classic 30, too. I think they're a little more American, though.

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

Traynors maybe a good choice for sure.... My Peavey C30 does an OK job at Zep sounds but it really lacks the low end thump that some of the recordings have.... But for the money it cost used it's cool... i love my Tele thru it!!!!

Every picture I see of supro amps.. well.. erm.. are they solid state? I hear he used a fuzz box..

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

a Jr. will get you there with the right pedals, but i dead hear a guy on one of those crates the other day that definitely had that tone going!

No, they're all tube. They made combos back in the day, too. ;) And the fuzz was a Tonebender.

Re: recommend combo for Led Zep?

I do basically the same as you describe in your post. I use a 1968 SF Super Reverb A/B'd with a Marshall 50W 900 Combo 2 12". I rarely use the clean channel on the Marshall seeing the Super covers all the cleans better. The 900 is an afforadble como. I have seen them in the 600 to 800 range. It would be a good choice. I prefer the 2 12" over the 1 12" though. I think it sounds a little thicker.
