Recommend me a boost

So finally I found a setting on my 5150 that I really like. Still, I don't like the lead tone and how unforgiving it is and its tough to coax harmonics out of. My tubscreamer sounds terrible through it; sounds really thin and nasaly sorta like if a wah pedal was all the way down. Im thinking a wylde overdrive since it provides so much smooth gain. I'd prefer it if the pedal was relativley inexpensive.

Re: Recommend me a boost

Dude, what can I say, be patient and wait for John Spina to start doing mods again, you can find my post here where I have the same problem with my TS9 reissue. And then after strutdeluxer's mod my TS9 is my main thing, I even practice with it on all the time.

Re: Recommend me a boost

Are you looking for a Boost or OD that can act as a Boost ?

Boost :

I LOVE my MXR Micro Amp - fantastic clean boost, that adds a touch of gain at higher settings !

EHX Nano LPB ($45.00) another GREAT bang for yer buck - Fullstop !!!!
It is also my next boost ! - does add a bit more gain tham the MXR, but that IS why i want this box !

OD's :

I LOVE OD's - FACT !

(i love cheaper, great sounding OD's even more !)

My ZW44 is great - sooo much better sounding (warmer, very-slightly, more gritty gain texture than my SD-1, which it is based on any way).
They sound sooo simmilar (unless you A/B them), i decided to mod my SD-1.
Send it to the UK, and got the Spider SD-1 now !!!

The ZW44 IS very underrated !
Great all-round OD, NOT just for hard rock/metal !!!

. . . but, my fav. OD as an Overdrive and/or Boost (by a country mile) is the allmighty Boss BD-2 !!!

This unit is bloody fantastic - and will NOT break the bamk either !

Gain - from nothing to serious overdrive to a fuzzy distortion !
Vol. boost as OD - great gobs of vol. on tap !
Way, wayyyy more vol. boost than either ZW44, SD-1 (or any other Boss OD), or TS/TS-clone !!!

Give this one a serious thought and do try one out yourself !

I LOVE MY BD-2 !

PS :

. . . another great OD/Boost is a "vintage" (ie. 80's) RAT !

Newer ones - NOT nearly as good, as they do not have the all-singing LM308 chip in 'em ! (...but Keeley, and those guys can fix it very qiuckly, for only a few $'s !)

Re: Recommend me a boost

I love the Marshall bluesbreaker pedal for just little extra or if you can get hold of one a vox valve tone overdrive pedal ( i got one last year on ebay:banana: ) they are awesome

Re: Recommend me a boost

I'm looking for a od because I want something that will alter the sound as well as add gain.

+ 1 - another very sweet OD !

(2-in-1 OD/Boost) - The Boost on my BB2 is HUGE

Price wise, i wouls recommend the BB2 over the new RAT's anyday !!! :smokin:

So i would then reommend the BD-2 first,, secondly the EHX Nano LPB & then the Marshall BB2 !

ALL, are great value for money !

Re: Recommend me a boost

You find it hard to coax harmonics out of your 5150??? Am I the only one who saw that part of the post??????

And amp like that shouldn't have any troubles coaxing harmonics out of.

As far as the boosts go, I can vouch for the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster and it's awesome! It can give up to 26dB of boost too which means you can really make it goose the crap out of your amp for more saturation and it will also get a lot louder. Great pedal.

For the OD tone altering boost you're talking about I myself use an Ulbrick 12axe and it's a fantastic unit...but unless you live in Australia they might be hard to get, and they're pretty expensive. Just experiment. In fact the best way would be to go to a shop with lots of pedals, and either use one of their 5150's or take your own and try lots of things to see what works.

One OD pedal I have used which is great is the Virtual Sound Route 66 OD/Compression pedal...and you can really make things sound sweet with that because as the name suggests it also has compression in it. Something to look at.

What do you mean by unforgiving?

I'd go with a BD-2, that goes for any tube peavey amp. I may get one but I actually like the lead channel the way it is.

Try a Boss DS-1...or a Duncan Pickup Booster. I'm very partial to both of those but if it's "inexpensive" that's important the DS-1 is hard to beat...especially if you can find a made in Japan one. Steve Vai used one...so did Joe Satriani.

Oh hey Lew! Good to see you're back!

Re: Recommend me a boost

Thanks for the replies. Cranked the amp and gain a little today and the harmonic problem went away. Its still unforgiving(meaning that it really exposes any mistakes). What do you guys think of the plexitone?

Re: Recommend me a boost

That will do the same to you!
No forgiveness in a Plexi either.
Dunno but what is the problem with the clarity??
Makes you hear what you do, can't see that is a bad thing?
:)

Yea I noticed this when I got mine, took 5 minutes to change my technique. Really was just an issue of re-tuning my ears.

Just try being a little more direct, heavier handed, and smoother. A pedal isn't going to get rid of that.

Re: Recommend me a boost

Hard to get harmonics out of a 5150? :eek13: Something's not right here.

What are your EQ settings?
What do you use between the guitar and the amp (other than the cable :6: )?
What pickups do you use in what guitar?
When was the last time you changed strings and what kind do you use?
When was the last time the tubes where changed in the amp and what brand are they?

Answers to these questions can help better diagnose the non-harmonics issue.

To answer your question, I used a Boss SD-1 before with admirable results.
That pedal has always worked for me.

Heh I think my technique was not right:laugh2: . Since I posted this thread I've been loving the 5150 more and more. The peavey dealer in my town doesnt sell tube amps anymore:yell: So I hope I get lucky and choose the right boost for christmas. I can just buy an SD-1 next time I go to GC. They go so cheap used.

Re: Recommend me a boost

Get a TS-9 - SD-1's do NOT do the same thing. They sound very solid state in comparison. Works well with a Recto, not so much with a 5150.

I'd personally go for a Maxon OD808 - sweetest midrange of 'em all. Most of the guys suggesting stuff aren't versed in the method we're using a TS in.

:eek13: Err, yeah, ok. Their circuit design is identical with not much difference in part values between the two. Theoretically, they do do the same thing. They just sound different. An SD-1 can be modded to 808 specs pretty easily. The biggest difference though will be the change of the clipping from assymetrical to symetrical. Assymetrical to my ears sounds more natural.

The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver is great because it can give you a clean boost tone, very crunchy overdrive, or anything in between. It's extremely versitile and inexpensive. I think it's a gold mine.
