Recommend me a bridge pickup

Re: Recommend me a bridge pickup

I like the APH in the bridge better than the neck version. The neck version is too smooth, a little on the dead side. The bridge APH is a great driver for complicated rigs. I used the bridge version in the neck with good results but vice versa isn't going to do well.

Overall I just got my first 78 and I might shortcut all these threads to say "get a 78".

you are right about the APH neck, it very smooth and warm. excels at solos but kinda weak for rhythm and power chords. i understand that the APH sounds really good with overdriven stacks because that's how slash does it, but will it sound right going into a small amp? i have a microcube with me in my dorm which i use most often, and a epi valve jr back home.

just checked the 78 out, its insanely cool but it exceeds my budget.. after all i am just a college student :(

Re: Recommend me a bridge pickup

thanks theodie. thank goodness i have not bought the jb yet. i think i am pretty set on the A2P.

by the way, does anyone know if theres a difference between the A2P neck and bridge versions? can the neck version be put into the bridge?

I have both the A2P in my les paul classic and im not sure about putting the neck in the bridge; it can be done but it might be out of phase. The neck and bridge version of the A2P were desinged to be in the same guitar together, The neck version is designed to go with the bridge so the neck has just the right amount of bass, mid and treble to go with the bridge. Let me just say that the bridge sound AWESOME through a LP, really crunchy and it just snarls through mine. But you can also back off the volume and it clean up really well. i love both of those pups man :headbang:

Re: Recommend me a bridge pickup

I say JB... with that pup, if you get tired of it you can do a $5 mag swap and get something that sounds good but different. Like a jb with a ceramic is a DD and with a A2 its an old version of the JB b4 they started using A5. and with a A8 it will blow your socks off. thick but not loose anymore and still screams if you waant it to.

how do you swap magnets in pickups?

Re: Recommend me a bridge pickup

After reading all of this, based on your issues with the superD - I say DO NOT get a JB, or a Pearly Gates. I think another a2P or a 59 will be what you want.

Go for the A2 if you want something a little smoother, or the 59 for a little more brightness (but by no means "harsh"). I say go 59. The a2P and 59 should really cover everything you want.

And the only diff in the A2P neck is the output - which is minor. They are pretty close. Give it a try - it's just have the logo upside down.

Finally - that micro-cube has some great sounds in it. Let the amp do the work. The 59 will provide a nice base for coloring with the amp.

+1 on all points.

Yes, you can use the neck in the bridge with no problem. It will have just a hair less output than a birdge position but, not enough to make a big difference at all.

Re: Recommend me a bridge pickup

I'm inthe minority, but I loathe Slash's tone; it's too even and balanced -- it's a scalpel, which isn't rock & roll at all. Custom Custom rocks my world, especially with the volume down. Your mileage may -- and should! -- vary.
