recommend me a compressor

i used to have the boss compressor pedal a while back and thought it took away too much from the tone, so i got rid of it.

i want something that can even out the dynamics on clean sounds without wrecking the tone. i play a lot of parts that involve finger tapping and i want everything to come through.

what else is out there besides the boss? are the MXR dynacomp's any good? what would you guys suggest?

I honestly don't think I have ever heard a good compressor!!! That is purely my opinion, but a compressor is something I have never gotten along with.

I never got along with compressors either. There is one that I actually was able to come to terms with, just couldn't buy it at the time. The Keeley Compressor. It's a Ross/Dynacomp clone with lots of improvements to it and it really is a sweet compressor. I sat with one at a guitar show for about 20 minutes working with one of his helpers. Told him my situation with compressors and he helped me out. It's not cheap but it sounds great and worth it, IMO.

It is because most are at loss what to do with it, lots of ideas about the comp, none based on much realism though:)
And alot of comps are not comps as they are in studios and such.
A good comp, for real compressor work it not noticeable when engaged.

MXR Dyna comp is the best i know of . . .


. . . tried the Boss CS-3 and it coloured my tone soo much, i ran out of the store almost fogetting to take my guitar with me !

I don't know if any pedals have these settings - Attack, Release, Threshold, Gain like a studio compressor? That would give you a chance to dial in subtle compression for your style.

You could get a rack mounted unit though.

Try a Barber Tone Press. Those have a mix knob that allows you to dial compression in parallel. I've heard nothing but good things about them... never tried one personally.

that would be ideal, although i'm trying to steer away from rack units. i'm okay with it not having controls for threshold, attack, and release, as long as it doesn't kill the tone.

i'm starting to think about dropping the cash for a dynacomp since they aren't too expensive and a decent amount of people seem to use them with good results.

I've got a Maxon out on a trial basis at the moment...I'll let you know what I think.

The Boss CS was terrible IMHO...just like SirJack said

By the way..would you PLEASE take the LP Studio pic out of your avatar...the GAS pain is killing me.

Beautiful guitar !! ...and I've never owned or really gassed for an LP until I saw your avatar pic.

haha thanks man. i like it a lot. but if it's giving you that much GAS, i better not tell you how much i payed for it ;)

The Barberpress is good, and so is the new Maxon, Demeters comp is also very good, it is optical and very guitarfriendly.
For oldschool comp the Ross or MXR is the way to go.

I'm certainly no expert, but the Maxon is worth looking at IMHO.

I tried it for a while tonight it was light years ahead of the Boss. Quite transparent and smooth.

BTW...what did you pay for the LP Studio...if you don't mind me asking....I'm sure that I can handle a bit more (gas) pain.

How about the Janglebox compressor? It's expensive (around $200), but I've heard that its great.

I would avoid the new MXR Dynacomps. I've got one with the extra attack control, and the release is extremely choppy. Instead of adding a meaty whomp to the attack and then streeetching the note, it strangles then mangles it. It's nothing like my friend's script logo dynacomp.

The only Comp pedal i've tried out that i could say i'd use is made by a Canadian high end pedal company called Diamond..... out in Halifax...

i think i've seen those online...looks like they go for a pretty penny or two, but they look pretty nice.

I am going to go against the grain here and say "i like my Boss CS". But then again i use it in a fairly unsubtle way. The sustain swell and resulting hiss is nice. Especially in the ol Dave Gilmour noodling on clean drenched in reverb... hey! He actually uses the same piece o crap .. . check... http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=31

I'm not a big fan of heavy compression, but I've found that the Aramat Organic Compressor is about as transparent as can be. It adds just a touch of clairty and evens out my string response, and still lets the true charecter of my amps (vintage Fenders, Traynors, Gibsons, and Sunns) ring through. Then again, I'm more of an old-schooler when it comes to tone, so it might not have as much compression as you want.
