Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

The nearest I've got is a Behringer TO800, which is not bad, but I'd like to step it up a notch. Out of the box, or even a self-build would do me.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

MXR custom badass over drive is fantastic. I've had it for a few weeks now and it's the best TS style I've played so far. Others I've played or owned include visual sound's 808, fulltone's full drive, and boss's SD1 with GT mod.

It's a little gritier than the others I've played or heard, but I like that. With options to exclude the usual mid range bump and adjust bass, it allows for a slightly more open sound. And in front of my MXR custom badass distortion and the result is even better, with a modern, aggressive tone.

After a few years of going through over drives and distortion pedals, I think I've finally found a keeper/go to tonal and flexible combination. I'm still adding other pedals, but my guess is that these will stay.

I guess with it being MXR, it should be relatively easy to locate one (at least when I'm not in Riyadh - Hong Kong in May is looking favourite). I'll check out some yoochubes...

The TS9 is pretty good though the old vintage originals are supposed to be the best.

Cheaper alternative is the Digitech Bad Monkey.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

I will suggest you two alternatives.

Mad Professor Little Green Wonder - this is what a TS wanted to be.
Jetter Gear Jettdrive - not a TS but, one of the best ODs to push your amp to a rock stadium sound.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

While they're not exactly TS clones, a MXR Wylde Overdrive is great if you want a more bluesy character to your distortion or want a big midrange snarl (it can do either), and the Fulltone OCD is great if you want something more transparent with a cleaner boost and not as in your face as the Wylde.

Maxon OD808 is a nice place to start and use as future reference. Pretty affordable too. Maxon built the original 808 Tubescreamers for Ibanez back in the day.

My favorite that I own is a T Rex Moller. I like it because it's dual mode. It's got a completely neutral clean boost and a TS side that's very tweakable. You can use both modes independently, or stack them.
The Fulltone Custom Shop FDIII is also a great choice, and it'll hold it's value as well.

Tonally, the Behringer is probably the best TS knock-off in its price range, but definitely lacks build quality. The Ibanez TS7 is a good value on the used market, if you stumble across one. However, that T-Rex Moller looks awesome! I'm generally a pedal minimalist, but I've been considering a clean boost and that Moller may very well be my next upgrade!

Maxon OD-808 and Maxon OD-9's are worth checking out. In a pinch even a boss SD-1 while not a clone fills the same niche and sometimes i actually prefer it

My favorite TS pedal is MJM Phantom. Yet, Voodoo Mod covers a wider spectrum and is hell of a TS.

Yean, the Maxons are decent. I actually prefer the SD-1, I have an Allums modded one, good stuff. Agree that it is not a clone, yet filled the same niche.

Here's the 4 that I like:

Wampler Paisley Drive
MXR - GT-OD and the Wylde OD
Digitech Bad Monkey

I've tried tons more, but these are my favorites

I like the BBE Green Screamer. I think the Bad Monkey is probably the best value.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

Only Ibanez captures the magic. TS9, modded to 808 specs. With all due respect, the Mad Monkey is really flat sounding -and even though it has more bass-compared to the TS-9.
I can't reccomend Maxon anymore( I mean..they might make a decent screamer )due to some bad pops of their footswitches I have expereinced with some very expensive pedals.

Yeah.. but in a live setting, can't take em apart lol. Joking lol... both are pretty good IMO though.

I'll second the MXR Custom Badass Overdrive. I love mine. The Mid bumb button and the 100Hz knob make it very versatile.

I would also suggest any of the Maxon pedals. I worked in a music store that had them. If they are available for you to try, give one a workout.
