Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

I mentioned the T Rex Moller earlier, because it's a pretty subtle sounding pedal that works great with guitarists who value their pickups, amps, and speakers, and don't want something that messes with that core tone.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Way Huge Green Rhino. Out of all the TS variants I've tried, the Green Rhino shifts everything down a couple notches. It's basically the TS sound with perfect bass control, lower mids, and rounder highs. The 100 Hz knob makes the whole pedal better. The pedal also has amazing sustain. This is why vintage Way Huge pedals were so respected. We got lucky, and Dunlop manufactures them cheaper now. Think of the Green Rhino as the 'fat tubescreamer.'

Another vote for the Green Rhino. I have the Ibanez TS-9, Fulltone OCD, and the Green Rhino. I am really impressed with the Green Rhino and like it over the TS-9.

I've thought about getting the Green Rhino, but I have the MXR Custom Badass, which also has the 100Hz knob. I'll probably get one eventually, because I'm sure they sound a bit different.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

I would just get either a Ibanez TS9 or 808. They work for me. I have a TS9 that was modded by Strat Deluxer(John Spina) & it has never left my board, but I use it more as a clean boost. I have the gain all the way down, the volume set to "boost" the amp & the tone set to not alter the tone settings of the amp. It gives me just a touch of hair & its all I need. That said I can get it to where it sounds real nasty as well.

One I've not seen mentioned above is the Rockbox Boiling Point. This video sounds good go, but has anyone given one a go?

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

Haven't tried that one, but my vote is for one of the DIY kits (general guitar gadgets, byoc, and madbean pedals if you don't mind sourcing the parts yourself) - those will let you dial in exactly the sound you want.

And, because with the madbean you have the option of sourcing the parts locally, you won't be gouged on shipping with the pedal.

If it has to be an off the shelf pedal, then I'm going to throw in my vote for the barber gain-changer. Demos I've heard sound fantastic and it has a tremendous range of tweakability. And it's compact.

i have a few tubescreamers but out of them I recommend and use the Maxon OD820 and Homebrew Doomsday Device. They both sound different from one another and go beyond the typical tubescreamer.

I've got a stache of parts and a few enclosures anyway - I'm not sure whether that includes any 4558's, but they can't be hard to find.

Yeah 4558's are really common - I also really like the Burr Brown OPA2134 (I think that's the model number) in that application. It's kind of a little sweeter, a little more hifi. I think they came out with a replacement for it though.

I've also tried the TL072 and the NE5532, and the 4558 in a tubescreamer circuit (SD-1) and fwiw the TL072 was very clean, whereas the NE5532 was smoother and the 4558 had a little more going on the in the mids. All great op amps though, but I feel like you'll notice a bigger difference switching diodes than op amps. Just my experience though.

That's taking me to what looks like their front page, rather than something specific. Should I have ended up at a product page?

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

I've tried a stock Tube Screamer, a Keely modified TS, a Visual Sounds Rt 808, and an RI Way Huge Green Rhino. My favorites were the Rt 808 and the Keeley. The stock was bland. The Way Huge sounded good, but too many controls for my personal preference.

Seriously the Rt 808 is a nice sleeper pedal.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

The nearest I've got is a Behringer TO800, which is not bad, but I'd like to step it up a notch. Out of the box, or even a self-build would do me.

What don't you like about the Behringer TO800? The reason I ask is that I have lots of TS clones, I collect them for fun, and the Behringer TO800 is one the closer ones to the Maxon OD808, so close that I consider it "stand in" worthy, so if you're looking for more je ne sais quoi, you might not find it. The closest of the close, though, is the EHX East River Drive.

Re: Recommend me a good solid Tube Screamer or clone to go and audition

VOX Ice-9 is the best TS clone value on the planet.

Its a two "channel" TS (two stacking gain stages), with 2 band EQ, 2 modes, and incredibly transparent input buffer, for $75. Same style pedal from T-Rex costs $300.
