I've been throwing around the idea of putting together a guitar but I always change my mind about what I want to do with it. I've already got two mahogany set neck, fixed bridge, dual humbucker guitars.
I already know what I'm looking for: Effortless higher fret access, sculpted heel would be ideal. Dual humbucker (I like single coils but for what I do I can't see myself using it all the time). Flatter fretboard radius, jumbo frets. 25.5" scale. Thinner neck profile, but not uber thin like Ibanez Wizard necks, yuck. I think a floyd rose is the only way to go at this point. Other trems are good but you just don't have the flexibility like you do with a floyd. Double cutaway body. For a set neck: Maple neck mahogany body. Neck through: all mahogany. Bolt on: Basswood body with maple neck. The neck construction is kind of inconsequential to me, but I think I'd prefer a bolt-on. A slim, lightweight body would be nice also. 24 fret would be nice, but not THAT important.
I was looking at the Ibanez Satriani models and the EBMM petrucci and they seem right up my alley but they are very expensive. I'd have to save money for a while to pay for one, even if I bought one used. I think buying one new might be out of the question. I was also kicking around the idea of a Carvin DC127 with mahogany neck and body neck-through. Their neck heel is super smooth and the guitars just feel so nice.
So yeah pretty much what I'm getting at is I want to get a good shredder axe. Almost everything I play is guitar instrumental. Jazz into the heavier stuff that I play. I'm in a two guitar group with lots of solos and the guitar takes the melody line, no singer.
Are there any other axes made out there similar to this that I've overlooked? I'm looking in the $1,000 and below range.
