Aloha!

Ok, I'm looking for a Wah pedal with the following:
- Good build & tone quality
- True bypass
- Step-on switching (not classic rock-forward switching)
- 'Good' fixed sweep balance OR adjustable sweep

Don't worry about price, I'll let my credit card worry about that! :)

Dunlop 535Q - fantastic build quality, one of the most versatile tones you can get (adjustable sweep, adjustable Q), true bypass . . . the only thing that it doesn't have is step-on switching . . . but I really think that if you play it for a while you can get used to that . . . anyway, just my two cents

Fullertone Clyde Deluxe. Its one Heck of a Wah.

I own 3 Wahs. An original Crybaby from the 60's. This was modded by StratDeluxe97, I also own a Vox Clyde McCoy and a Vox 847. I use the modded vintage more than the others. It is much more vocal sounding than the others. The Vox Clyde McCoy is a close 2nd. I will use this on my Backup pedalboard that I am building. It is a real good Wah. The Fullertone Clyde Deluxe is one of the most expressive pedals that I have played. A Vox 847 modded with all the right stuff will get you the same thing and will probably cost less. Hopefully John will Chime in and offer his comments. Of the 3 I have I would say a stock Clyde McCoy is a real good Wah! or if you don't mind spending a little more The Fullertone would be the way to go.

The one thing you have to remember is the type of guitar and Amp you use. This will affect the Wahs vocal range. If you use a LP thru a High gain Amp, it is likley to kill some of the low end of the Wah. If you play thru a Fender Amp in a clean setting with a Strat it will tend to be more expressive. IMO a Wah has the greatest amount of range when played clean. Think of EC doing Tales of brave Ulyses with Cream, That is a Killer Wah tone. Then think of Jimi playing Rainy Day Dream Away. Also a Killer sound, but a very differnt voacl quality to it! Both are played pretty clean.

The best "vintage" sounding wah I've tryed(And I've played through several) is the Fulltone Clyde pedal that Lew let me borrow...I need to say that it isn't neccessary to buy the Deluxe Fulltone model if you want the Hendrix type wah tone...All you need then is the "Jimi" setting and the add on of an external gain or volume pot on the regular Clyde fulltone wah...I found the other 2 settings of Wacked and Shaft,wouldn't be of any use for my wah needs...This is a pricey pedal though...Both of the Fulltone pedals are...

The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is a Fulltone Clyde with an externally mounted "Volume" Unity Gain pot and the 2 extra wah voicings of "Shaft" and "Wacked"...If you only need a vintage Clyde wah tone,just get the standard Fulltone Clyde!

Or.....Keep your money in the forum family(Like I do)and let me set you up with a great wah overall.... :wink:

The work I've been doing with 847s and the 848 Wahs,puts my wah right up there with the best wahs available today and with alot more ability to shape the wah because I add alot of adjustable pots to the wah...I'm also using both the Fulltone inductor and pot(And switch)and this is alot of the tone you get from the Fulltone wahs is due to a great pot and inductor...

If you pick up a used 847 or 848 wah,I can get you a really great sounding wah(With a power supply all modded for under $200...The 848 already has a power supply and true bypass,but it's about $50 more than the Vox 847...Older Crybabys are great for mods(Like Bludave's)but stick with the older ones that don't have the jacks mounted onto the circuit boards..

I've modded several wahs for forum members and maybe they will chime in? Lew was liking my modded 847 there for awhile more than his Fulltone wah,but our ears and thoughts on tone are forever changing....

Wahs I've done off the top of my head include...Lew,Curly,Brow,Bludave,Sweet Lou,Working on Armotron's wah now,and MRID off the top of my head...

With the exception of the Dunlop/Vox 847 and 848,most of the Dunlop line isn't very mod friendly by comparison,especially if you want true bypass...It can be done,but it's a pain in a$$! LOL...

I do like the two Vox 847 wahs John modded for me. And I like the Fulltone Clyde alot too. I'd go for either of those. I think the Fulltone Clyde and John Spina modded Vox 847 are the two best wahs I've ever used. Lew

Hmm... That Fulltone Clyde Deluxe sounds mighty tempting! Anyone know anywhere that sells 'em in the UK?

The modded one sounds good too John, but I'm in the UK and what if I didn't like it?! I'd have to fly all the way over there to kick your arse! ...Then I'd lose and have to fly back all broken and hurting... That would make me sad. :rolleyes:

I think Charlie Chandler is a UK dealer for fulltone pedals. Do a search on google for charlie chandlers guitar experience.

I love my Bad Horsie 2, step on operation, 2 modes, one with adjustable level and contour. Don't think it's true bypass though, and it doesnt have that 'vintage' tone.

So far no one has wanted to kick my a$$ after they got their modded wah(s) back,but I don't want to start a trend with my UK buddies! LOL...

The Fulltone wahs are great and don't sweat the small stuff brother....Do what you need to do and with no explanation... :dance:

Hmm... I've just seen the price of the Fulltone Clyde DeLuxe!! Aye Carumba! £320!!

So here's my shortlist:

- Vox Clyde McCoy £130
- Budda Wah £150
- Teese Real McCoy RMC3 £175
- Fulltone Clyde Standard £250
- Fulltone Clyde DeLuxe £320(!!)

As you can see I've dropped my step-on switching requirement. I like to have tweakability in my pedals so the Teese and the Deluxe jump out, but I'm primarily looking for a vintage wah tone so, like John said, maybe the Deluxe is overkill.

So it's probably between the Teese and the Fulltone Clyde Standard! But which?!!

I'm going to be moving to New Mexico this summer and thinning out the herd so to speak and I'll sell you one of my two Vox 847 wahs that John modded for me.

I sent him my Fulltone Clyde Deluxe pedal to anylyze and my 847's now sound every bit as nice as my Fulltone...maybe nicer. They have full bypass and the adjustable volume control like the Fulltone too, so you can actually boost the output a little if you want to...I always do. Like new condition.

I just don't need four great wah wah's! (I also have my original Vox Crybaby from the late 60's early 70's that John tweaked too!) Make me an offer.

JOHN: What do you think one of your Spina Modded Vox 847's is worth?

If Lew wants to send me that wah first,I'll add the upgrades of a board mounted midrange pot,and a gain and Q pot to that wah...I think it just has the outside volume(unity gain)pot on it now? Am I correct Lew?....Did I add a power supply to your 847 also?

This is Armotron's wah that I did yesterday for him...His wah has an outside Q and Gain adjustment and adjustments for mids and volume on the circuit board,plus a power supply....If you want the upgrades,just have Lew ship the pedal to me...I'll upgrade it and you and I can deal together on the shipping..

ALex also had me install the foxrox buffer in his 847 so he can run his wah into his Fuzz without problems.....

John, you added true bypass, a gain/volume control, adjustable resonance, battery eliminator and a Fulltone inductor to this wah wah, plus your usual tone tweaks. You didn't add the mid boost....that's something new I guess. Thnaks! Lew
