Re: recommend me an amp that...

Sound City made some great stuff which still flys under the radar somewhat because of the active EQ on some models, but its a cool system once you get to know it. I think Christian uses a 50 watt one. Also check out stuff from Sovtek, the Laney Supergroups and AORs are definately worth considering. These are all pretty easy to get hold of in the UK on ebay, i'm not sure how often they pop up in the US though.

Re: recommend me an amp that...

I recommend the British made IMPACT 60 watt head (made in the late sixties/early seventies)..Similar to the Sound City, but with less hum. Only thing, is that it has two el 34's and 3 ECC 83's instead of four el34's you requested, but still worth hunting down if you're into the JTM 45 kinda sound/tone, but at a fraction of the price.

Hmm yeah, I know them. Funny lookin beasts aren't they? All angles and chrome and stuff? Real similar to the sound city.

Re: recommend me an amp that...

If it's to sidestep cost due to "popular demand", consider hunting out a 60's japanese Fender clone (teisco, guyatone, Elk). They're cheap and can be nice, if you wanna 6L6 perhaps?

Re: recommend me an amp that...

Univox. They had 6L6's but were very plexi-ish amps.

And they look cool.

Re: recommend me an amp that...

Peavey Butcher is one thing that might work.

Sovtek Mig 60 is another. Might not be 100 watts, but it's a killer amp nonetheless.

+100. I've got a U1246B that I A/Bd with my buddy's 73 50 watt Marshall and the Marshall had just a tad more distortion and power. Hooked up a Plexitone to my Univox and they were in the same league. Univox cost me about $350 after purchase and tech freshen up. Marshall cost him $1600. Left me lotsa money for a cabinet, the Plexitone, cables, tubes, beer, sex, drugs, Monty Python dvds etc.

Using my strat, I could get anything from super clean, dirty blues and 70s type rock sounds. What a great amp.

Re: recommend me an amp that...

Interesting criterion.

i like stuff that not a lot of people have, i hate the thought of being one of those LP studio into JCM2000 guys (no offense if that's your setup, i just like unique sounds)

did traynor make a 100 watt head? I'm not really interested in combos & that seems to be mostly what i see from them

Re: recommend me an amp that...

Carvin X-100 with EL-34's. They eat Marshalls for lunch and have amazing clean tones!

You have passed the test. You are ready for a tube PA. Go to ebay, do a search for "tube PA," and discount the references to Pennsylvania. Find one that you can have modded (basically with 1/4" ins and outs) or that is already modded that runs on EL34s. Plug in. Rock. Smile.

Your main hangups will be: 1) you'll have no idea how it will sound (that's part of the fun actually), and 2) most are between 10-40 watts (that's a good thing to me).

Careful....they're addictive. You'll have like 5 in no time.
