Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

Stevo

Tonus Maximus Pacificas
I love his playing and tone on Black Magic Woman, but I must admit that I have not heard a lot from him, outside of the old-school FM tunes.
Were his best days with Fleetwood Mac? Is there a must-have solo album? What should be my first PG album? :)
Thanks

"Then Play On"

for more straight ahead blues, the earlier albums like "English Rose", the "Trash Can" album - I think it's actually called "Fleetwood Mac", and "Fleetwood Mac in Chicago"

I'd start with Then Play On, though.
he had amazing touch & tone in those days - bittersweet one moment, and scary fierce the next

I like the HARD ROAD CD he did with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Supernatural is beyond awesome. One of the greatest guitar performances I've ever heard. BB King said that of all the English blues guitarists, Peter Green was the only one that gave him goose bumps. Lew

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

a friend told me just last night that supposedly, he was about the only player not intimidated by Hendrix. :)

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

Thanks guys. I found some of your suggestions on half.com already. It looks like one choice might not be enough.. gotta love John Mayall too :)

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

There is a great box set, cheap I have to add. Got it new from best buy for $36, 6 CDs. Includes almost all Fleetwood Mac albums + various cuts of some of the songs that they did not print. (Then play on is not included, it is Pious birds of good omen; pg's fleetwood mac; the original fleetwood mac; mr wonderful; and blues jam in chicago I and II.)

A hard road is a MUST BUY cd! then play on is cool, but it is more rock than the bluesy stuff of the others. There are some live cuts of fleetwood mac during the then play on era, and man they could play so harmoniously. Very lively, very upbeat stuff!

And on a side note, blues for greeny done by gary moore is a good indication about how he would have sounded if he were to make them recordings nowadays. Moore got his playing quite alright. I must admit that I don't care much for him, but still that is a good album.

Check also the splinter group era. Some of them still have the sparks of his glorious playing.

I LOVE that guys playing.

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

I like the FM Greatest Hits, an excellent primer. Then Play On is cool but there are a few things that haven't aged well. I want to get the Boston Tea Party discs next.

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers- A Hard Road

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

Not much to add, but

All three Tea Parties
Shrine 69
The two-disc "The Blues Years" set
The Chicago set

I'll PM ya with some bootleg stuff I have, too.

Also, brace yourself for the Jeremy Spencer stuff. You might like it, but I remember reading one guy on the LPF say that he hated the JS Elmore James stuff so much that he couldn't listen to Elmore anymore! It's good in small doses, at least for me, but it's kind of like how maybe you wouldn't want to hear Ringo sing all the songs on a Beatles album.

I saw Peter Green with the Splinter Group a couple of years ago. They shared a bill at the Boulder Theatre with John Mayall (Buddy Whittington on guitar). It was a very good show! Peter's playing isn't quite as strong as it once was but it was very good and he's come a long way. It was his singing that surprised me. When they did Green Manalishi he sounded just like the old Peter Green. Lew

Re: Recommend Me some Peter Green Music

I would much rather listen to Jeremy Spencer's Elmore James imitations than his early rock and roll parodies. I think JS has EJ's style down to a T.

My favorite Peter Green moments are "World Keeps Turning," a solo acoustic thing he does, "Oh Well" and "Rattlesnake Shake" with Danny Kirwan live are always great. His slow blues tunes like "Jumping at Shadows" and "I Need your Love so Bad" are very BB inspired.

In my opinion, Gary Moore may capture some of Peter Green's style, but Green is in a league of his own. If I were Gary Moore, I'd be embarrassed to play green's guitar.
