Ok My friend wants to buy a tube amp thats half decent, but only has up to £300 to spend. Obviously i realise most tube amps are in excess of this, so what would you go for if you were spending this money. He ideally wants tube, but perhaps in this price range a moddeling amp would be better? or a very good solid state?

He plays a bit of everything, but mostly metal (maiden, slayer, megadeath) and wants an amp that can last him ages.

Cheers,
Forbes

I'm not to sure on the exchange rates, but he could try out a Peavey Classic 30 with a nice Distortion Pedal. You could also check out prices on the Crate V series 30 watt amp. I bought the 50 watt version brand new and I love it, but the 50 watt is not in that price range.

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

He does have a job that pays ok i think, so he may be able to save up if there is something drastically better for not much more ££'s.

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

You'd probably get the most bang for your buck by going with a british amp...maybe a Laney?

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

Yes, def go with a EL34 based amp. Laneys are fine amps and can be found for cheap.

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

Thanks guys, so Laneys, any one got one/can recommend one for this cash?

sorry, but can you please find out the exchange rate to US dollars?

It's somewhat irrelevant, seeing as how they will be shopping in the UK. The market in the UK is different from ours. A DSL might be cheaper than a Hot Rod Deluxe over there.

Well £300 is just under $600, about $575, but the problem is gear is usually very expensive over here, in some cases we pay the same in pounds as you pay in dollars, a $500 guitar can often be £500 for us (in my small experience), and this is why i think he may struggle to find a decent tube amp for this cash.

Yeah, generally, if it's not UK, or at least European made, we pay in £ what US pays in $, kinda crappy.

I'd say a second hand Laney or Marshall, you may find one for that sort of money, probably a 30-50w combo...

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

I'd tell him to save up for something he knows he'll cherish for life. In the long run, it's all wheel and deal with the budget gear.

Re: Recommend my mate a new tube amp

I have a 100w all valve Laney Head I'm selling if your friend may be interested?
