Recommend some good budget cabs for my Engl Fireball

Hell guys

I recently got my hands on Engl Fireball 60w head and looking for some cheaper range cabs which should cost no more than $500. I'm into hard rock/metal and prefer Celestion speakers as they sound best to my ears. I found some cabs listed on https://guitarcab.com/guitar-cabs-under-500/ but asking you guys maybe have some more recommendations.

Hi and welcome to the forum! :D

Do you want a 2x12 cabinet? Maybe a 4x12? I would imagine you want a closed back cabinet.
Also, do you prefer to play classic rock? 80s metal? Modern metal?
Will you play mostly in standard tunings? Or do you use seven strings/downtune very low?

Maybe you could name what sounds you're after and what the rest of your rig is like.

I've been pleased with my Bugera 112TS. Sounds very good, very inexpensive and is rated at 80w. There 2x12 would also work very well.

Laney makes solid cabs. Also check out the IRT series.

You own an Engl fireball, don't cheap out on the cab.

Go used

Mostly looking for modern tones and 2x12. I play in drop D with my Ibanez Prestige SA2075.

Laney IRT212. I just got one & I love it. The stock Laney/HH drivers sound awesome but really need to be broken in...that's when they open up. Tight, deep & punchy bass, thick mids & sweet highs :bigthumb:

Whatever you do, find something with speakers that have prominent upper mids to facilitate the fact that the FB60 has none.

My recommendation is to go used Mesa or Orange, V30s have plenty of upper mids

Whoa... you have an Engl and wanna go cheapy on the cab??? No!

Good 4x12s are stupid money if you buy new. The shipping on used ones are prohibitive. Go pawnshop hopping. Marshall 1960 cabs are everywhere used and they're good solid cabs and usually have good speakers. You never quite know what's going to be in them, but if they aren't what you want you can swap them later.

IMPORTANT PRO TIP: Your choice of speakers is every bit as important as your choice of guitar pickups or your amp head. Do not half-ass this point. You say you like Celestions... well hell, which ones? Celestion makes a lot of speakers and they vary pretty radically one to the next. I use vintage Celestion G12-80s and good luck finding them for reasonable money, especially 16 ohm versions to go in a 4x12. I basically won the lottery with the deal I got on these. The modern version is the Classic Lead 80 and they DO NOT sound the same. Not even close. Don't just say "i want a cab" and not worry about what speakers are in it... the speakers are one of the most critical components of your tone.

An ideal cab for that 60w head would be a 100w Greenback loaded 412.

Second choice for that amp would be a 120w V30 loaded 212.

Avatar Cabs

I have their oversized 2x12 that sounds phenomenal and it's just at $500: https://avatarspeakers.com/product-category/guitar-cabinets/

Otherwise a Carvin Legacy cabinet is an awesome sounding option too. Don't disregard 2x12s btw, they sound REALLY good and I personal find them to be more balanced sounding than 4x12s, as 4x12s can sometimes be too bass heavy and get a bit muddy.

Used cab with old UK Celestions

Brand is of little consequence, the value of a used cab is in its speakers

Good speakers: V30, CL80, MC90, g12-65, g12k-85, g12k-100
Popular but imho meh speakers (ymmv): t75
Utter junk speakers: celestion "rocket" series

Made in UK > Made in China

Most modern cabs and most modern Celestions are China junk. Thats also where the "old ones sound different" thing you keep hearing comes from.

Note: Modern V30s can ONLY be bought UK-made with MESA (all mesa v30 cabs) or Marshall branding (AV/BV cabs only). Marshall 1960A cab, often marketed as industry standard (it's NOT), is a shoddily built pos with CHINESE speakers.

I'll second the others who have said not to cheap out on the cabinet, especially with a great amp like the Engl. I also understand budgets! And Celestion does makes some great speakers, but they also have some crappy ones as well, I learned that the hard way with my first 4-12 KMD cabinet with "Celestions", it was a POS and I had some great amps that sounded terrible through that cab, and it took me a while to figure out that it was the cab (it was a long time ago and I was young and dumb, now I'm older, and have learned a few things).

I will also second the Avatar recommendation, they make great cabs and I would recommend a really nice 2-12 over a cheap 4-12 any day, actually I prefer them, easier to carry and you can stack them for a monster 4-12 look if you buy a 2nd one. Also, as has been said, shop used! You'll get twice the cab for the money over new.

I also wouldn't overlook Eminence or WGS speakers, they both make great sounding speakers on the same level as Celestion and there is a lot of tonal crossover in their lines.

Re: Recommend some good budget cabs for my Engl Fireball

I can find various used Mesa 412 and 212 cabs for $500--600; often the 412s will be the same price as the 212.

But if I were really on a tight budget, I would hit the pawn shops and look for a late '80s to early '90s PEAVEY cab, like their 412 MS. Better yet for your use would be one of the original 5150 cabs with their Sheffield 1230 speakers. These are both solid, durable cabs. You might need to to some cleaning, vacuuming some new paint on the corners. I wouldn't worry about speakers too much. Just play it and recoup your money when you are ready to move on. Peavey gear offers great value new, and even better used.

Good luck.

Bill
