Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Schaller system, as long as they've been around.
I have them on every guitar, bass and instrument other than acoustics with end pin jacks.
Bought close to a hundred buttons in chrome, nickel, black and gold from the importer
here in Aus years ago to match the hardware and still have plenty left. All my straps are equipped with them
so I don't have any issues with strapping up. I do however have numerous straps in lengths
to suit different types of instruments.
Only once did I have a mishap and that was with a mate's guitar and strap, he hadn't
securely attached/tightened the nut on the locking mechanism to the strap and it slipped through.
The locking mechanism has to be securely attached so that the weight of the button on the
guitar is sitting in the bottom of u shaped opening and the nut is done up tight.
Done so they'll never fail unless damaged and they're pretty near unbreakable.
I've had two guitars with Dunlops for a short time and they worked well but I was always wary
When attaching the strap onto the guitar, it felt flimsy.L
Those other straps that use the plastic buckles are a POS! The buckles brake and the small end attached
to the guitar when you remove the strap, easily scratches the guitar.

How the hell did you manage to break the DiMarzio buckles? They can take a lot of abuse.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Probably the part that goes into the buckle on the end of the strap, not the buckle itself. Those arms do flex a bit, but if you broke the part that the strap-end snaps into, your guitar has structural issues you might wanna look into.

Exactly right, plastic becomes brittle with use. Rocking out with 22 beers and a 12 pound LP copy probably contributed:friday:

Yeah, I figured that's what it was, which is why I said earlier I don't like the idea of swapping straps to different clips. I leave them on, even when I put them in the case. Minor finish damage I can live with - finding out you've hit the limit of how many times you can un-clip it and re-clip it the hard way I can't.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Funny how it takes dropping a guitar the motivating factor in wanting strap locks! Been in the same boat and +1 for the DiMarzios

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Schallers are the way to go, I use to use dunlop until they failed on my and my gibson when hitting the ground and broke the headstock

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

What about those Dunlop "twist and lock" things?

These are the ones that came with my Charvel Pro Mods

And I didn't trust that small ball lock mechanism, mostly because I couldn't always feel it snap into place, and it felt like it was always under stress and ready to pop out, which it did a couple of times.

[Disclaimer--I'm a D'Addario sales rep]

I've used the two-piece Dunlops and Schallers and both are great and get the job done. But what happens if you lose one of the pieces? You're sunk.

D'Addario makes a Rotating Elliptical End Pin that solves the strap lock problem with no part to get lost.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Interesting. So you've got one half crossing the slot in the strap and the other half going parallel to it? Should be stable enough. My concern for the oval strap pin was what happens when the strap rotates (putting the guitar on, etc) and aligns with the end pin, if it ends up in "taking the strap off the pin" position and slips off.

I let my singer play my LP once when it had a regular strap on it, and he wasn't paying attention to how the strap end had flipped over. It slipped off the pin and my guitar almost hit the floor. After that, it got a ClipLock.
I prefer that type of system for that reason alone.

The Rotating Elliptical End-Pins have two pieces. The outer piece rotates while the inner piece is stationary.

When you put the strap on, the two pieces are lying one on top of the other and end pin is kind of football shaped, allowing the end pin to easily go through the strap hole (see photo on left). Once it's on, you rotate the outside of the "football" while the inside remains stationary. The result is kind of like a cross. It's somewhat visible in the image on the right.

When you want to take the strap off, you line up the two parts, changing from a cross shape back into a football shape, and you can remove the strap.

I hope that makes sense.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Evan
maybe a pic of the two positions without the strap

I'm sure you have wonderful mousetrap

but it really isn't clear in the images

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Click the link and you get a decent close-up of the pin.

On one hand I'd be worried that the eyelet of the strap would wear out and slip off like my singer did with my LP, but then I guess as long as you don't lend your stuff out...

And replace the strap once in a few years

I'd also thought of having some way to tighten the eyelet once it was on the pin, so the strap was basically forever paired with the guitar (unless you remove the strap pin).

Hmmm. Need to find straps that don't have holes in the ends. I figure you remove the pin, put a hole in the strap that the rear of the strap pin can barely go through, then screw the pin onto the guitar.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Then again, for $17+ each for those pins, I may as well get a full DiMarzio ClipLock strap

I was going to recommend the dunlop plastic dealies till i read up on them and they tend to break/ wear out and scratch guitars.

And the ball bearing design does instill any confidence in me either. I have a pair that came on my peavy cirrus 6 string bass. It doesnt let you know its locked in and i dont fully trust a bb in a groove held by a spring loaded pin to hold everything in place always. Iput schallers on everything. It does look like a chess piece.

Re: Recommendations for Strap Locks or Locking Guitar Strap

Scratching the finish doesn't bother me. You should've seen what the DiMarzio buckle did to the edge of my LP Standard. But it's much better than what I've seen the floor do to one.

If I'm going to have a locking mechanism that inserts into a receiver, it's going to be a cotter pin, even if the strap becomes a permanent part of the guitar.

But I ordered a dozen non-locking straps from Ebay last night, and I might be hitting the hardware store when they get here. Got some ideas to try out.
