Recommendations on second hand jazz boxes to look for.

Okay so even though i got rid of my 137 and am getting a les paul, i still want a very pretty jazz guitar and will probably be looking at second hand stuff.

Ive seen some lovely looking guilds on their site, the single neck humbucker archtop (cant remember exactly what its called) so ill probably look out for one of them. As well as old gibson hollowbodies too.

So im looking for a big cool looking hollowbody or semi hollow, with f-holes preferably, which will mainly be used as a jazz machine but which i could also use for something sorta funky perhaps. But no rock requirements ;)

Also if possible i want good access to the upper frets. One thing i noticed on my 137 is that the neck join was pretty big and there wasnt much access to the high frets. I didnt like this.

Also i want it to be something with either the jazz pickup at the neck, or twin humbuckers.

So throw some ideas around guys. Cheers :D

If you don't want to break the bank to get good tone, Dean makes some pretty good stuff (my Chafin Del Sol rocks... it's a smaller version of the Gibby 335). However, most people when they hear Dean, think "metal" so it's all up to the individual. http://deanguitars.com/jazz_stylist.htm

I think Guild would be perfect. Namely, the Starfire series. Beautiful guitars! If you have the dough, I think it would be a wonderful guitar to have.

This guitar looks pretty nice for the money: http://www.cort.com/endorse/coryell/

I can vouch for the Tokais especialy with a set of seths installed!

Washburn do a couple of nice jazz boxes too - J6 & j9 I think

the guilds are amazing guitars, I want one of their jazz guitars eventually.

Re: Recommendations on second hand jazz boxes to look for.

either an early 80s or early 90s Gibson Howard Roberts...much better than the current 137s, and often overlooked in vintage circles, which keeps costs down.

Norman is obsessed with Tokai... I think he OWNS the company... j/k

I'd suggest one of the new Ibanez's, you can take your pick on the hollowbody ones, they are killer for the price. Their new Tallman solid bodies are pretty nice, too. I'll give Ibanez some credit now-a-days, but, I'll never touch one of there strat-knockoffs.

Wish I did god I would make a fortune!! :)

Out of curiosity Young Angus lives in Australia and I would have thought some of the Korean/Japan made guitars would be cheaper then sourcing them from US or Europe - is that right?

dont pass up the ibanez offerings ... depending on age and condition, they can range from less than $500 to ~$2K or more with many good ones in the middle or so

+1. I have a white/blonde Ibanez AF105 that is beautiful, and sounds great with the '59's I put in it. Full hollowbody, but not full depth, so it's very comfortable standing or sitting.

They keep coming out with nice hollowbody models in thinline, medium & full depth.

Don't forget that, when Les and Ted originally devised it, the Gibson Les Paul guitar WAS a jazz model.

Big ol' flatwounds and some P-90s or P-Rails would get you into that particular ballpark.

Don't take my word for this. Scour YouTube for video of Les playing live.

KAC had one for sale for a while...might give him a PM. It was either a Godin or made by the same company. Cool looking with a P-90 at the neck.

There should be a law banning the bumping of 5 year old threads :D
