I saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=japBKzYtfN0&search=knopfler of Mark Knopfler from the DVD "Dire Straits on the Night" and he's playing the Local Hero theme. Man, the clean sound was so amazing. This YouTube vid doesn't do the DVD version justice.

I already have a Swamp Ash guitar with Duncan SSL-1's. What amp would I need to get such sparkling clean sound? Or perhaps the arpeggiated notes on the ending of Suzanne Vega's "Caramel?"

Fender BF/SF, 40 watts +, 12" speakers...Pro Reverb, Twin.

I think that you can get some great dire straits sounds with a humbucker equipped guitar, mostly clean amp and a little compression . . .

Re: Recommended amp for Dire Straits clean and jazz?

For this tone I bet you need a SSS guitar because the #2 and #4 positions are necessary..the "quak" tone :)

Fender amp would do it with a nice reverb/delay unit.

Imho! :)

Man, I love this song and DS :D

Cool video! Is that a Schecter?

+1 to the BF Fender recommendations btw.

I just got freaked out! I was doing something else while listening to the song slowly download. The beginning sounds like a plane crashing, and I work in an Airport office building! I thought a plane was coming down outside!

Ok, back to the thread!

I wonder if there's a Roland Jazz Chorus Amp on that partocular live recording...kinda sounds like one to me.

Sounds to me like there's some effects on that Mark Knopfler thing...a little chorus at least.

Mark used to use Lindy Fralin Vintage Hots, but Duncan SSL-1 or Ant Surfers will also get that tone through the right amp.

Some kind of blackface Fender amp would be nice...a loud clean one like a Twin Reverb or Super Reverb.

But I hear an amp that reminds me of a Jazz Chorus Amp on that cut.

That's great... thanks for sharing it

His guitar is modded with three on/off switches replacing the 5-way. If I'm reading it right - and up is on - then it looks like he is playing the bridge pickup alone. Am I seeing this wrong?

Re: Recommended amp for Dire Straits clean and jazz?

I thought that during the early days he used a supro?

Twin Reverb

Yeah........... I gota agree with ya. There ain't nothing that can compete with a Twin for Loud and clean!

Re: Recommended amp for Dire Straits clean and jazz?

They are very common amps i know and not every vintage tube amp lovers first choice..... but i saw a guy in a bar using a Fender HotRod Deluxe, and an american strat..... They did lots of Dire Straits and stuff like it.... he had the sound down

Re: Recommended amp for Dire Straits clean and jazz?

I think Fender made and amp recently that was louder and cleaner than a BF Twin......the CS Dual Pro. i sawone on Ebay recently and it was goig for a fair amount lesthan th typical BF Twin.......and it ain't 40 year old:fingersx:
