Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

Hi guys,

I've never bought a set of pickups before and I'm looking to upgrade my stock pickups. I'll be replacing the stocks in an Ibanez RG1570, which is a H-S-H setup. The body is basswood and the neck is a maple/walnut blend. Bridge is a Floyd Rose tremolo. I listen to a lot of metal predominantly, Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Metallica. Do you guys have any suggestions of good pickups for my particular setup? I've looking for rhythm type stuff mainly. I do like the sound of the SH-4 JB and am leaning towards that based on the sound clip on the SD site - I prefered it a lot more compared to the SH-5 and SH-6.

Well, JB would be good. but it's bottom end will be alittle less focused/tight as compared to the DD or Custom since u mentioned playing metal.
But nonetheless its still a goods choice. (think early 90's megadeth tone).

for the neck i recommend the Dimarzio Air Norton. one of the best neck pups i've ever used. i have one now in my basswood Ibanez RG550.
very round and smooth sounding and yet it does pitch harmonics fairly well in the neck.

Yes-Do not fear the PATB's in a Basswood Ibanez RG! They are a fantastic matchup. There are plenty of other ways you can go as well though.

In a basswood RG you should go for the SH-5 imo. The JB is too thin, too loose, and to bright imo. The Custom has the Balls you'll need.
For the neck the Jazz should be great. Very clear and articulate.
No idea about the middle Singlecoil.

We need somehow more adds and more info about the PATBs.People do not know what it is ,how it works and how good they are.
Just a bunch of people uses them here ,so they are not popular! But they have to be more popular than many others IMHO.
So we need a plan for it hahah!Even the "experienced" merchants and other salespeople do not know about them. It's a shame!

thanks for the info guys.........any ideas what the ahb-1 blackouts are like in basswood?

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

They would absolutely kill as well. The added dynamic range really helps in a Basswood/Locking trem guitar because it stops it from sounding overly compressed and dull. It just depends on whether you're looking for the Active sound or not.

If you want to use active pickups, go for the Livewire Classics, or if you aren't too worried about getting clean bridge tones, drop a Livewire Metal there. If you want passive pickups, SH-8 Invaders also work well for metal.

JB would be good.

BUT.... Invader / Invader would be fun too!

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

well to be honest, I will be needing a decent clean sound somewhere so I'm probably not gonna go for a livewire. I think an AHB-1 blackout on the bridge sounds awesome to me. the whole 12dB less thing really appeals to me cause I do a lot of recording in front of an old CRT monitor and therefore hum reduction is essential! I'm undecided on the neck so far.........is it possible for me to just upgrade the bridge pup and keep the neck and middle stocks pups for the time being in an RG1570?

i like distortion and jazz for neck. beautiful combo.

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

the guys from trivum used a dimebucker on the last album, i think the guy from bullet for my valentine used a JB then switched to emgs, FYI the dimebucker is somewhat similar to an emg 81, an 81 is somewhat similar to the blackouts probably all have similar eq with subtle differences in sound. matt heafy from trivium went back to using emg's again. if i were you and had some bucks i would go for an 81 for the bridge an s single coil for the middle and a 60 in the neck. you could cover a lot of metal territory with this.

I've got DD on my IBZ RG470.. If you play rthym-based it's excellent.. It's plenty of chunky but i think that while soloing it's not clear and some notes may get lost...

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

I've got an old Seymourizer & a PATB-2,should I try them in a bolt-on Squier Stagemaster?

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

PATB1 and 2 can bring you there bro!If you want more gain .go with the PATB 2.More Dynamics and a tad less gain ,PATB 1.
Basswood needs balanced EQ ,and those PUs give that to you!

Re: Recommened a good SD neck and bridge for me.....will be used for metal

matt from bulllet for my valentine uses a jazz/jb and the other guy im not sure, ive seen him with esps with emgs but then he uses his gibson v more, so im guessing those are stock...
