Recording Basics?

Hey Guys....I have my new Celtic Edana coming shortly & would like to post some clips.

What do I need for a good basic recording? Initially, I don't need backing tracks or anything like that; I just want to record the guitar-amp-speakers.

BTW...is it just me or does it bother you guys that when listening to a clip of an amp you might want, the backing track DETRACTS from you hearing the amp clearly? Sure, it makes for a more interesting clip, but I wanna hear the amp..........

Anyway, I assume a Shure SM57 is the classic standard.....what else do I need to get the music into the computer & then post it???? :beerchug:

It comes with a version of Cubase....anyone familiar with that? Learning curve for an idiot???

Hi Puck--

That interface is a good start. I use Sonar but Cubase is pretty easy too. An SM-57 is a decent mic as long as the placement is good. I've been reading up on all sorts of techniqes and mics in the past few days and one popular method to record a guitar amp is using the SM-57 or Sennheiser MD421 just off center on the top left speaker in the cab, then using a large diaphram condenser mic like an AKG C3000B or an MXL V63B or V69ME about two feet away. Mic preamps are also really important to get a great sound, but just the Shure should get your point across.

Being the holiday season, answers are coming slow on this forum I guess because people are busy. I know some others will chime in and help a forum brotha out. Hopefully my thimball full of knowledge was a start, LOL.

I personally no longer use the 57. It leaves too much out tonally and is a bit of a fight to get great natural tone with, even a 58 is much more forgiving in terms of position. Trower uses one 3-4 feet back off the speaker. I have really taken to mic's 7 to 8 feet back. I have a couple old Shack PZMs, converted them to XLR and I am getting tone that is bringing a big smile. Much like drums and room mics, the amps just sound bigger to me. I was forever a 57 up close guy, on Planet K, I stopped useing that after just a few tunes.

i honestly like the mbox if u are just doing guitar....i tried one at a store about 2 weeks ago, very nice product....and the software that it comes with is really amazing...

a friend of mine bought the m-audio 'mobile pre' .. it is about $150 and comes with some software for tracking too ... USB powered so convenient and quiet ... i forget if it is one channel or two ... he bought one of these inexpensive large diapraghm mics for about $100 (that you see in the AMS or MF catalogues) and gets very nice results with it ...

dont forget the importance of the monitor speakers .. as you try to match the sound when playing back the recording to the sound that you hear in the room when you play the amp

I owned that Tascam US-122. It was great. The only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted a ProTools rig. I highly recommend it if you're new to PC recording.

Is that the one with the 1/8" stereo output?
