Recording Gear.

Hi guys, I wanted to start a thread where we could all post gear questions and advice.

Actually, the reason I wanted to do this thread is to ask you guys for some advice.

I'm thinking about recording some songs and this is what I have:

A cheap harmony guitar with the 12th fret broken,
A cheap $7 gaming mic,
Adobe Audition 1.5,
Creative SB Live! Series Sound Card??? (I think that it's broken).

Here's the stuff I'm thinking of purchasing:

Shure SM57 Vocal/Instrument Mic and
Behringer UB1202 Mixer/ Toneport/Guitar Port.

Suggestions?

Jesus you could write a PhD on this stuff, but...

I'd snag a new soundcard, a Soundcraft mixer over the Behringer POS, and a condensor for the acoustic.

Do you think that a Shure SM 57 would do a good job recording a 30 watt amp? I'm interested because I also want to record electric guitars.

SM57 is basically the industry standard. One of those on a V30 sounds amazing, IMO.

That said, they don't sound so hot on acoustics or vocals, or really anything but guitar amps, snares, toms, and maybe a bass amp for top end.

I recomend something like a M-Audio Mobile pre. You use an USB cable to hook it up to the computer and then you plug your speakers, mics, etc into it and it acts like a sound card.

Ive been thinking about getting a toneport + a SM57 also. Im wanting something very basic that can capture my Laney a little better. Ive got a pretty decent USB mic, but its mainly for vocals. With whatever you decide on, just report back, i would like to know how it worked out.

Actually bro, the 58 is used as a vocal mic on a ton of classics and major label releases. Bono has used one for vocals on several U2 albums...it is often the mic of choice for 'screamer' type vocalists.

The trouble is that most folks who use one for home recording are using lower end pres.
Put the 58 in front of an API, Daking, Neve, GML etc...and it will be silky and responsive for vox or acoustics.

True...not used much for vocals in the studio, but still very cool with a nice front end.

I have a Sure SM57 and a Behringer Tube Ultragain MIC200 (12ax7 mic pre amp) directly into the soundcard. I just started to record some stuff and I'm impressed by the quality, very quiet. The mic pre cost me only 60 bucks.
Takes a looong time to find a good micing spot @ the speaker!

Celestion Vintage30 guitar speaker.

most popular guitar speaker on the planet.. or at least the most sold one.
some love it, some say the top end is too much.. its all personal preference. i love mine, but i'm looking into mixing it with a g12h in my 2x12.. though, then i need a 2nd mic to mic both speakers hehe
