recording gear

hey guys.
I've been meaning to get some recording gear for quite a while now as i really weanna start getting into recording and what not.
I've got a decent repertoire of gear right now and i just wanna settle and start doing my own stuff.
I've quite short of cash but willing to spend on recording gear.
I was just gonna go for the plain ole' shuge SM57 with some mic preamp, into my laptop input.
Any tips?
My friend has asked me to consider a Nady SP1, some budget mic which is close to the SM58.
Any "budget equipment" that'll do me well, I just really wanna get into things with a decent foundation of recording stuff and i'll slowly build up the gear if i need to.

Re: recording gear

okay.Check m-audio ,tascam ,line 6 tone-port for the usb mic/line preamps ,choose the righjt one for your budget ,
you need a descent DAW ,look to Ableton live ,nuendo and ofcourse sony acid pro.

Re: recording gear

whats a daw?
hmm okok, are those behringer mixers alright? decent enough to start off with?

Re: recording gear

i was thinking, maybe just 2 or 3 channels at one time.
Say a mic and a condenser for my amp and another channel for bass or acoustic if im jamming with someone?
Is this alright?
a Nady SP1 and a condenser, and a MAudio 410 or something. Not sure.

Re: recording gear

Ok, this sounds dumb, but what EXACTLY does a condenser do that a normal mic doesnt?
Can i just get a condenser?

There are different types of microphones ,active ones (like the sm57 ,they do not need phantom power) condenser (they absolute need phantom power ,otherwise they will not work )

The Behringer mixers are def. not my cup of tea.if you like to buy a mixer ,you need to buy a descent sound card too.So why not to buy a USB sound interface box like the tascam and line6 toneport and have the mixer faders on your display?
A DAW is a digital audio workstation, the recording software for your computer.
If you like to use your laptop to record anywhere (like studi ,bedroom or whatnot)than take the line 6 toneport ux2.Thats your best bet!

Re: recording gear

An SM-57 or SM-58 (which are basically the same mic) is about as low as you'ld want to go price wise for mics. They're decent, and are used in professional studios. Depending on the amount of money you want to spend, there are a lot of preamp options . . . I would recommend the M-Audio DMP-3 if you want to go super cheap, or the FMR RNP (Really Nice Pre) if you want a great mic preamp. If you go much cheaper on the pre, you'll regret it . . . I would stay away from the cheaper condensor mics if I were you. Wait until you have enough cash to splurge on a really good one and you'll be happier in the end.

That would be dynamic and condensor, so not to confuse anyone. There's nothing active about a 57, or dynamic mic.
