Ok fellas, I'm really a noob when it comes to recording. I've been playing for 7+ yrs but I've never really try recording mysef other that with a cheap tape recorder for practice sake. I;'m not sure which way to go: Micing my amp and recording that way or using a interface/software and recording directly. Which is easy, which sounds the best, What are some good (practical $$$) mics and sofeware. My gear : '76 Les Paul Deluxe, '03 MIM Strat - TS9 - Graphic Fuzz - MSD Silver Machine Wah - Ibanez WH-10 Wah - '96 Fender Prosonic 2 x 10 combo amp.

Suggestions, help, advise....please

thanx

What sort of computer do you have? That's pretty important to know before we start recommending things.

I have a dell Dimension E521, I also am going to get a external hard drive for added mem. I believe it has either a pentium celeron D pros. of pentium 4.

Re: Recording guitar....School Me!!!!!!

I'm finding it much easier to have a different set up for recording than for practice than for jamming, etc.

For recording, I prefer an amp sim (like a line 6 product - I often go out the speaker out of my flextone I head into a direct box with a speaker sim, to the preamp, to the computer). However, the behringer sansamp clone I ordered should be in soon, and I'm hoping I can get some use out of that little box to lay down some tracks. I'm also toying with recording a clean signal, and then applying an emulator to it to acheive the final sound. It's a big hassle to me to drag out mics, mic pres, a compressor, then crank up an amp in a house just to record some demo quality stuff. Might as well just emulate it; doesn't sound much worse, if at all. Some peeps are kind enough to practice their reamping skills on your clean-recorded tracks. Then you can hear your stuff through a Krank, 5150, etc., and with someone else's nice mics and such. Then they can crank it in THEIR house, bwahahaha!

Re: Recording guitar....School Me!!!!!!

Well, I just bought the Black Box Reloaded from M-Audio, and mounted it to a mike stand (very sweet). I'm using Audacity (Freeware) for recording, but will most likely upgrade to Sonar once my skills in recording build up a bit.

The Black Box models 40 amps and has tons of effects, and on board drums.

I think the little system is perfect for my situation/skill level. Going to pick up the pedal/switch board and get a good mike, so I can mike the amp as well.

I hooked up the little unit on Saturday, played all day. Probably 10 hours since Sunday. This unit is precisely what I needed to kick start my playing again.

I played better 10 years ago. I'll pass that soon. I'm going to try and practice at least two hours a day.

Have Fun with whatever you get. Oh, I too got an external hard drive for recording and main computer backup. I'm very happy with this setup at this time.

Cool suggestions, I've been thinking about the Line 6 tone port/keyboard combo, anyone use one of these, is it reletivly easy to use?

Re: Recording guitar....School Me!!!!!!

Here's a thread I had a while ago: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=106262

What I finally decided upon was:

1. Shorterm: Get one of these: http://www.stealthplug.com/ and be done with it. $130 or 99 euro

2. Long-med. term: Get two mics (The shure - the all time standard one + another one) get a very good recording sound card. If the card has a pre amp for the mic (it should if it's good enough) then it's ok, if not, I should get a nice pre amp to go with it.

This way I can keep busy for some years having fun recording without much hussle and then build up my high quality recording gear slowly since it is more expensive. plus all the software will still be there for me to use with the mics also!

that line6 thing looks like a good deal. the nice thing about going direct with some kind of preamp or emulator (ie pod or vox tonelab) is that you are taking your room out the equation. what i mean is that by micing your cab room acoustics come into play. most of use don't have the luxury of performing soundproofing or investing in acoustical enhancements. the direct route also means that whenever inspiration strikes you you're ready to play/record.

i haven't personally used that line6 thing but if it's like their other stuff it probably is easy to use. and it's likely packed with other cool goodies. all this being said an sm57/58 shoved up against the grill of your speaker cabinet is usually a very easy way to get very good tones. but as mentioned previously other factors come into play as well.

Wow, tubeman, that's a wild looking piece of equipment.

They jusy came out with it late last year/early this year, it cool could it has everything the tone port has and some key for arranging or playing. Its looks worth looking at.

That's a cool cable. Looks like I'm sold on the SM57. You're the last of many people who mentioned it.

Re: Recording guitar....School Me!!!!!!

My recording rig ended up being right at $100.

Shure SM57
Lightsnake cable (http://www.soundtech.com/lightsnake/xlr10.asp [Soundcard in a cable solution])
Audacity

Sounds really damn good to me.
Here's something really simple I just recorded for this post: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=685825&songID=5334107
(It's midnight so I can't crank anything up to avoid the buzzyness)

That sound great! Thanks for the clip, I have to say I need to hear what it is that I'm looking into, that clip really helps, thanks!
