Recording Noise . . .

I have just recently upgraded my computer from a 600 Mhz PIII to an AMD athlon @ 2.4 gigahertz . . . and the only problem that I've found is that the computer has introduced a whole lot of hum into my amp. It's really weird because I was (virtually) noise free before with exactly the same computer parts and stuff. My amp makes the same hum when my guitar is unplugged so I know that it's not the pickups . . . and I use Planet Waves cables which I've never had any trouble with before. Whenever I turn my computer off the amp goes dead silent. This is really killing me because I used to record all of the time on my computer and I like to jam along to songs playing off of my computer . . . Anyone have any ideas on how to silence this noise, or whar might be causing it?

Re: Recording Noise . . .

That's very odd man. How do you have the amp and PC connected, or are you micing the amp? Also, where are you and the guitar at in relation to the tower and monitor (proximity, direction you're facing)...

Re: Recording Noise . . .

I'm usually about 4-6 feet from my computer . . . my amp is about the same distance, and I'm miking the amp. The noise isn't from the mic though . . . i'm wondering if it might be some kinda interference from the frequency of the chip or somthing . . . but I don't know how to sheild against it . . .

Re: Recording Noise . . .

Hmmm, how is the mic connected to the computer? I can't imagine what could have happened with something as simple as a processor swap, I'm wondering if there's a grounding issue somewhere (say if there's a USB port in the picture or something). I'm befuddled haha.

Do you still get the noise when the PC is not in the picture, just guitar/amp, etc.?

Re: Recording Noise . . .

single coils are notorious for picking up energy from the monitor, but I don't know about humbuckers... when I faced my monitor I got noise when I turned my back to it i didn't.

Re: Recording Noise . . .

The second my computer is shut down I get no noise whatsoever . . . My new processor has a big copper heatsink on it . . . and more fans, but i don't think that that should be the problem. And I know that I get a little noise from the monitor, but I usually shut that off when I record . . . I can kinda change the sound of the noise by moving my guitar around, but the level of noise remains the same . . . i dunno what to do . . .
