Recording Software/Gibson Memory Cable

Hey guys, I'm just curious what you guys use for recording your stuff. I was thinking of getting the fancy Gibson Memory cable, but after talking with a friend he suggested getting a 1/4 to 1/8 jack adapter and plug into a laptop mic port . This would work, but you would still need some type of software to record that.

Are there any decent low budget programs out there? I have to admit, I like the one feature on the Gibson cable, it turns the recorder on and off automatically when you play or stop playing, so if you are stopped playing and checking stuff out the recording device will stop when you stop and not waste the sd card space.

Thoughts? Anyone out there using this cable?

So what about when you're doing punch-ins and fills? I prefer to keep everything rolling during those, rather than the 1/2 second lead-in.

I dunno about plugging straight into the mic input. Depends on the laptop, I guess, but I'd prefer an interface. Yeah it's more to lug, but I'm sure the results are better.

Well, I've been thinking that it might be better to go with a USB external sound card on the laptop and plug into that since a laptop doesn't really have a proper interface.

I've got a MOTU USB interface that I use for mine. It fits in the outer pouch of my laptop bag just fine. It can draw power from a 6-pin Firewire port, but I've not seen a laptop that has one. The 3 laptops I've owned have only had a 4-pin. So, I have to carry a small power strip and the AC adaptor for the unit, but it generally works out fine.

If you go the mic jack route, download Audacity. It's free, and it's really great. I've used it many times to record quick ideas. I prefer to use an actually mic with the program, but that's because I'm usually singing also. I also use my Rocksmith cable sometimes when only recording guitar.
