Recording tips

just wondering, does anyone have tips for recording at home? When we record, we run a laptop with a mic, and a mixer with a mic. The laptop's mic is for recording, and is usually placed in front of the amp, and the mixer's is used for the singer. As far as I can tell, I think the recording mic (from laptop) is placed in front of the speakers where the voice comes from. The problem is, I think the distortion is way too distorted for the mic. Should I roll off the highs and distortion a little? What should I do?

Uh... the distortion probably isn't the problem which is leading to.... the distortion. The microphone might not be designed for the volume your playing at, or there's a problem with a cord or the computer or something. Make sure you aren't clipping, and see if you can get a good clean sound.

Yeah, I'm wondering if you're not overdriving that microphone. I'm addicted to the direct-in. I know that the sound isn't as good as a well-mic'd setup, but to be able to record at midnight is a huge plus for me.

The best tip I can offer is - get a mixer. Even the cheapest $40 Behringer is better, (lots better), than nothing. The fundamental function of a mixer is to be an interface between the sound you're trying to capture, and the device you want to capture it on.

Its like trying to bake without an oven. Sure, you can use the sun - but not in the rain. ;)
