Recording with line out and stompbox

I thought I'd record something using my amp's line out going to my minidisc line in. Cleans are ok but when I used my stompbox I heard nothing but fuzz and noise. Wtf? Even with the gain turned way back still the same fuzz.

When I record with a mic everything sounds fine, though the soundquality isn't great because it's a cheap mic.

Do I need different settings for recording this way? Or does a stombox just not work well with this way of recording?

Most amps sound OK going direct with cleans, but for dirt you need a speaker emulator (sometimes called a cab emulator or simulator).

What kind of speaker emulator? Are we talking about a piece of harware or software here?

I'm not a big fan of recording off of a line out, the tone is just too buzzy. Berringer makes a direct box that has a speaker simulator as well as a 40 db pad on it so that you can record direct from your power amp instead of the line out. I've used the Berringer direct box without the simulator but with a 40 db pad and the tone was somewhat better than running off of a line out, which is usually a preamp tap.

You'll get better results by either purchasing a better mic or by purchasing an amp modeller of some kind. Line outs always seem to sound bad and lack alot of harmonic content (sound flat and lifeless).

The problem is the guitar speaker act as an low pass and only pass frequencies 'til about 5KHz then it drops of. If you go direct you have no filtiering of highs and it sounds just fuzzy etc....
other preob: the speakers make the sound/tone...
if you want some ok results you have to filtering or use something that simulates the cab...or just back the highs on the pedal
i have to look i think i have some c**l ed!t EQ settings which sounds a bit like played thru an guitar cab.

Well a new mic is definately something I'll purchase very soon but if you have some nice settings Marcel, I'd be very gratefull. I use C**l ed!t too.

nightburst if your using the metal zone to do the recordings then alot of the problem would be the normal crap it puts out. with that pedal for me it's a must to have a noise supressor on.
