Recording With USB Equipped Multi FX

I have no experience with computer recording but now I feel that I really need something that I can record with and convert to an MP3. Just a simple 4 track (rhythm and melody mainly) - so I could send it to my band mates.
Having a multi effect like the POD could be nice for backup in live gigs... I'm don't want to spend too much on a multi effect and I'm definitely not into starting a home studio.

So...

Line 6 Pocket POD, Digitech RP 155, Zoom G1U... Do you just plug them into the PC, download a program and record?
Or is the USB connection only for uploading presets on the MFX box?
Do they have programs that you can download from the website - or do you have to pay for a compatible program (or buy and learn how to work with QBase)?
Do I need additional hardware?

I can talk for POD X3 Live.

1-2) Connect to your PC via USB. Install USB drivers. Then you can use the same USB connection for both recoding using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and patch management using GearBox.
3) Line6 only provides you the USB drivers. Audacity is free DAW you can use. It is very simple too. Other products might com along with a DAW (I think zoom g2 come with CuBase)
4) Additional hardware requirements depend on your current hardware. If you have a USB2 port, powerful CPU, at least 2GB of ram and enough HD space you are good to go.

As an additional advice, I don't think Pocket POD is ideal for gigs.

Although studio series are great for home studios and recording IMO they are not suitable for gigs as backups.

Both POD X3 Live and Studio comes with bass and mic premaps long with guitar preamps. Studio needs the PAD farm for these preamps which comes with both products.

any recording program should work with the above...the effects unit becomes an external soundcard.

The GSP1101 worked pretty good for me.

That's very cool. I'm such novice when it comes to computer recording... only times I've done it, it was with friends who handled all of the technical stuff.

I guess that in the end it will come down to getting a good deal for any of the options.


BTw, anyone has experience with the Zoom G1.U?

Used to own a Zoom G7.1ut for about a year. I never used the bundled CUbase software that came with the unit. I used Audacity and Reaper. Just plug the unit through the USB port and it would be the main input and output for your PC sounds. You have separate patches for recording and live use. If you use a live use patch for recording, chance are that it would be noisy, due to too much gain and unbalanced output.
